Question for the brothers, especially those in Birmingham, AL — what is considered a reasonable Mahr in the US?

My potential owns a small business and has kids. I'm a little confused because in my country, the man provides everything for the new life. He buys the gifts, furniture, and everything the bride needs — we even donate our old clothes. The gold amount depends on his finances, but we keep the Mahr in the nikah contract very small.

Since Mahr is given on the day of Nikah, I'd like to handle it like we do back home so I can prepare.

So I want to know, how did you handle the Mahr discussion? How can I bring this up respectfully?
