I think Muslim political organizing in the West is absolutely cooked. I attended a session of this ostensibly Muslim political organizing movement called emPowered by a group called the Faith Power Alliance at my local masjid where an imam from another masjid (or maybe he’s a travelling imam) named Muhammad Abdullah (may Allah bless him and reward him for his efforts) gave a lecture on the importance of knowing what our self-interest is, in terms of why are we personally interested or motivated to get involved in activism. Very good stuff Masha’Allah.
Where it went wrong was he gave the group of us a historical example to illustrate the message that as Muslims, we should completely capitulate our values to “live to fight another day”. He gave us the scenario of being an ancient Greek people on the island of Melia faced with an impending invasion by the Athenians in the Peloponnesian war where we had to negotiate with the Athenians (he played the role of the Athenian), the Athenian side offered no terms except to be complete slaves of the Athenians, and the point of the intransigence was to get us on the Melian side to say we would rather be martyrs than accept unacceptable conditions of capitulation. This, he emphasized, was the wrong approach, and we should have accepted complete capitulation and surrender, to “live to fight another day”. This, he said, was the difference between being a martyr and being an activist.
He then cited the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah as evidence of this, that the Muslims accepted doing a qada umrah the following year and being turned away that year, that the basmala and reference to the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ was removed from the treaty, and that any Muslim who escaped to Madina from Makkah would have to be turned away. Never mind the fact that if the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the sahaba accepted idolatry for even a minute of an hour of a day a year that the Quraysh would have accepted them and let them do as they please, but the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his noble companions refused, and would have rather become martyrs than accept shirk and compromising tawhid.
I believe this mindset the Imam taught is precisely the mindset that our political leadership, whether organizers or politicians, believe in. When you look at politicians like Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Zohran Mamdani, or Abdul el Sayed, they all have abandoned Islamic values and principles in the name of allowing Muslims to get some inkling of political power. There is absolutely no daylight between these candidates and any ordinary non-Muslim progressive candidate, except they identify as Muslim, but in their values, they celebrate pride, march and proudly take selfies with trans activists, endorse the idea that we should love whoever we want and there’s nothing wrong with it, and abortions on demand. Ilhan and Rashida went so far as to vote to sanction Indonesia for a province implementing tazir punishments for same *** relationships.
Now I know what some of you are thinking. Why do you care so much about the LGBT and abortions? I want to be clear that I’m not saying we need to go hard in the paint being homophobic or misogynistic, a reasonable compromise would be to affirm upholding the constitutional rights and protections of all Americans in a way that says la kum deenukum wa liya deen. But to openly celebrate what is haram sends two messages to Muslims: that you can’t succeed in politics except by abandoning Islamic principles, and that you don’t truly need to follow Islamic values to be a good person. In the US, by the third generation, only 30% of the descendants of Muslim immigrants will remain Muslim. That’s horrifying. The fact that our political leadership and activist movements encourage nothing more than the complete utter capitulation of Muslims to progressive, kafir values is only furthering this degradation of the Muslim community. These are our leaders.
I wish we could have leadership that never abandon Islam. Allahu Musta’an.

A small clarification following a conversation under my recent post about Mansa Musa.
Someone raised the subject of the UAE, African gold, and I'll add the last part "the war in Sudan". I mentioned that I remembered reading about a connection between gold, conflict, and serious allegations involving the region.
I promised to look into it properly, so here is what I found.
Sudan is a significant gold-producing country, and gold has become deeply connected to its war economy. Research by Chatham House reports that much of Sudan's gold ends up in the UAE, which is one of the world's major gold-trading hubs. In 2024, nearly 97% of Sudan's officially reported gold exports from army-controlled areas reportedly went to the UAE.
There are also serious allegations concerning the UAE's alleged support for Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group accused of atrocities in Darfur. The U.S. government has sanctioned RSF-linked individuals and companies, including a UAE-based company it said provided money and weapons to the group.
But I think it is important to draw a line between documented facts, allegations, and conclusions that have not been legally established.
The RSF has been accused of genocide and other grave crimes. However, saying “the UAE committed genocide” is a much more specific allegation, and I would not present that as an established fact.
Sudan did bring a case against the UAE at the International Court of Justice, but the court dismissed it on jurisdictional grounds. That decision was not a ruling on the truth or falsity of the allegations themselves.
So, my takeaway is this:
Africa's natural resources, international trade, armed conflict, and foreign influence are deeply connected. These issues deserve scrutiny, but scrutiny should be guided by evidence, not exaggeration.
And beyond the politics, the people of Sudan are the ones living through the consequences.
May peace and justice prevail in Sudan. 🤲🏽

HOW IT BEGAN
After WW1, Germany owed reparations and also had huge debts due to borrowing in WW1. The debt bankrupted the country and created a breeding ground for political extremism. Middle class families and pensioners watched their life savings vanish within a matter of months.
American and British financiers stepped in and offered Germany loans hoping to get rich off the interest.
Between 1924 and 1929, about 63 billion dollars flowed into Germany, 30 billion dollars of which were loans; from which 70% were from American banks. Germany used the money to repair its industry and pay reparations to France and Britain. Meanwhile, France and Britain used the reparation money to pay their war loans back to America. The money flowed in a perfect circle back to the United States.
Germany thrived between 1924 and 1929 which became known as the 'Golden Years' of the Weimar Republic. However, the economy was entirely dependent on loans. And when the 1929 Wall Street Crash suddenly hit, American banks began demanding their loans to be paid back across the planet. German banks collapsed and the German people saw their savings vanish for the second time since the end of WW1.
THE RISE OF THE NAZIS
On January 30 1933, Hitler became Chancellor of Germany after meeting with Montagu Norman (Governor of the Bank of England) and Franz Von Papen and Hjalmar Schacht who decided to make him Chancellor. He then travelled to the US and met the president and the most powerful bankers on Wall Street, after which $1billion more dollars worth of loans were approved for Germany.
I.G. Farben, the German conglomerate which produced synthetic fuels, rubber and the Zyklon B gas used in extermination camps, had formed a partnership with Standard Oil (owned by the Rockefellers). Standard Oil shared with IG Farben the technology and production methods for hydrogenation: the process of converting coal into synthetic gasoline. Without this synthetic fuel Germany's military strategy would've been impossible because it had no fuel reserves of its own.
In 1935, General Motors and Standard Oil transferred the technology for Tetraethyl Lead to Germany, despite protests from the US state department. Tetraethyl Lead allowed Nazi bombers and fighters to achieve the engine performance necessary for aerial combat. Without this chemical, the Luftwaffe would have never been able to carry out its attacks.
Standard Oil also helped IG Farben develop Synthetic Rubber Technology called Boona.
At the same time, Standard Oil kept the process of Boona production a secret within the United States, preventing US companies like Firestone and US Rubber from learning about it until June 1940, a year after WW2 began (1rst September 1939). Consequently, by the time WWII broke out, America's supplies of synthetic rubber were severely short.
The American Ford Company had a subsidiary called Ford Werke in Germany. Henry Ford hated Jews and blamed Jewish bankers for starting WW2. Henry Ford allowed Ford Werke to use forced labour, including concentration camp inmates, to produce vehicles for the Wehrmacht.
Meanwhile, Ford did his best to avoid helping the Allies. In mid June 1940, Henry Ford withdrew from an agreement, brokered by the United States, that demanded Ford produce 6000 aircraft engines for the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 . Eventually, when America decided to invade in Europe, in 1943, Ford was legally forced to manufacture vehicles for the US Army.
In Hitler's own words: "I consider Henry Ford to be my inspiration". He even awarded Ford the Grand Cross of the Order of the German Eagle, the highest honour given to non-Germans that were of great importance to the Third Reich.
In the United Kingdom, General Motors owned Vauxhall Motors. Vauxhall manufactured thousands of trucks and the heavy infantry Churchill tank for the British Army. At the same time, General Motor's German subsidiary, Opel, was producing the Opel Blitz, a three-ton truck which became the main vehicle used to move Wehrmacht troops and supplies across Europe and into the Soviet Union. James D. Mooney, the vice president of Opel, sympathised with Nazi policies and felt that Germany had been treated too harshly by France and England. Opel also manufactured many of the Luftwaffe's aircraft.
Without the collaboration of General Motors and Ford, Germany wouldn't have the vehicles or aircraft it needed to carry out its attacks and move its troops and supplies across Europe and into the Soviet Union.
Thomas Watson, owner of IBM, had a soft spot for the Nazis and transferred technology which they used to automate lists of names on punch cards which showed each individual's age, occupation and location. These punch cards made the deportation and extermination of Jews much easier for the Nazis. Watson returned his Grand Cross of the Order of the German Eagle medal 🏅 in June 1940, expressing that the use of his technology did not align with his values. However, the damage had already been done.
Furthermore, Chase Bank (precursor of JPMorgan&Chase) helped the Nazis by freezing the accounts of Jews in occupied France, and blocked the movement of Jewish funds and property. Chase did this before the Nazis had even officially demanded it.
The BIS (Bank for International Settlements), based in Basel Switzerland, served as a secret meeting place for bankers, even from nations who were at war with each other.
Whilst millions of soldiers were killing each other on battlefields across Europe, Asia and Africa, the bankers who financed both sides of WWII, were secretly meeting in Basel to maintain and settle their accounts, and talk about profitable relationships. The BIS president, Thomas McKittrick headed the BIS meetings.
Thomas McKittrick was an American with connections to powerful Wall Street financial institutions. He was able to travel freely across Nazi Germany to hold meetings with the Nazis. And whilst German U-boats sunk thousands of Allied ships in the Atlantic, those same U-boats were given standing orders to allow Thomas McKittrick to sail through.
Under McKittrick, the BIS accepted Gold from the Reichsbank, much of which had been looted from occupied nations such as Belgium and the Netherlands.
The BIS also acted as an intermediary between Nazi Germany and supposedly neutral nations. Sweden, for example, sold Germany the Iron it needed for steel production, and in return Sweden accepted looted gold as payment. The BIS facilitated these transactions. And, Dog Hammerskold (who would later become Secretary General of the United Nations) was directly involved in these transactions as chairman of Sweden's Central Bank.
In March 1939, The BIS transferred 23 tonnes of gold belonging to the Czechoslovak National Bank to the Reichsbank. This was authorised by Montagu Norman (Governor of the Bank of England) who approved the transactions. The British government was formally notified about this but the transfer happened anyway.
Some of this gold had been extracted and melted down from the teeth of exterminated Jews
After WW2, Thomas McKittrick was appointed vice president at Rockefellers Chase National Bank and lived comfortably until his death in 1970.
The grandfather of former president George W Bush, Prescot Sheldon Bush, was a director of UBC which operated as a clearing house for the interests of Fritz Thyssen, the German steel and Coal magnate who was one of the earliest supporters and financiers of the Nazi party. UBC gave Thyssen the means to move assets (funds, bonds, gold, coal, oil and steel) around the world using a network of front companies.
WAS THE ONLY MOTIVE MONEY?
NO
It's important to note that making money wasn't the main motive behind why the western elites supported the Nazis. Many elites did not sympathise with Nazi racial ideology.
But Hitler was a capitalist who crushed socialist movements in Germany. Therefore, despite Hitler's genocidal intent, they supported him, because Wall Street and the Bank of England preferred a strong Germany that would not fall to Bolshevik Communist movements.
Some figures who originally supported the Nazis, eventually became bitterly opposed to the regime. Fritz Thyssen, for example who originally fired Jewish employees from his own company, changed his mind after witnessing the abuse of fellow Catholics by Nazis and the horror of Kristallnacht.
WHY MANY OF THESE INSTITUTIONS AND FIGURES WERE NEVER PROSECUTED.
After WW2, Europe was in ruins. And Germany needed to be rebuilt quickly to prevent Soviet Expansion into Western Europe.
The same American and British establishments, that had provided the Nazis with loans and technology, were desperately needed by western governments to rebuild Europe to prevent it from falling under the control of the USSR. Only they had the technology and expertise to rebuild Europe. And bringing them to justice would implicate too many high ranking figures and created huge public scandals.
Therefore, western governments did not prosecute them.
For example, Hjalmar Schacht (Hitler's banker), who secured funding for the Nazis and helped convince president Paul von Hindenburg to appoint Hitler as chancellor, was allowed to go free at the Nuremberg Trials. He resumed his career as a financial consultant and travelled the world, advising developing nations on economic policy, and died peacefully in 1970.
Instead, the same institutions and individuals that had helped the Nazis, were given the task of rebuilding Germany and financially aiding western European recovery after WW2 under the Marshall Plan.
