In the Tijaniyyah Sufi path, serving one’s Sheikh (Khidmah) is not merely physical service, it is a means of drawing closer to Allah through sincerity, adab (proper conduct), humility, and obedience in righteousness. A true mureed understands that the Sheikh is a guide to Allah, not an end in himself.

Some of the etiquettes of serving one’s Sheikh include:

1. Sincerity (Ikhlas)

Serve solely for the pleasure of Allah, not for praise, status, or recognition.

Never regard your service as a favor to the Sheikh. Rather, consider it a blessing Allah has granted you.

2. Observe Proper Adab

Speak respectfully and gently in his presence.

Avoid interrupting or arguing with him.

Guard your tongue from speaking ill of him or entertaining doubts and rumors about him.

3. Obedience in What Is Right

Follow his guidance in matters that are in accordance with the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Be punctual and consistent in carrying out the Awrads (litanies) and spiritual practices he prescribes.

4. Serve with Humility

No service is too small when done sincerely for Allah.

Whether serving food, organizing gatherings, assisting guests, or helping with his affairs, do so cheerfully and without expecting anything in return.

5. Preserve His Honor

Defend his reputation with wisdom and good manners when falsehood is spread about him.

Never disclose his private matters or betray his trust.

6. Benefit from His Knowledge

Attend his gatherings regularly.

Take notes of his teachings and strive to implement them before conveying them to others.

A mureed should seek transformation through his teachings, not merely physical closeness to him.

7. Pray for Him

Constantly make du’a for your Sheikh, asking Allah to preserve him, increase him in goodness, and bless his efforts.

Remember that one of the greatest forms of service is sincere supplication.

8. Serve Creation

The Shaykh’s mission is to bring people closer to Allah. Assist him by serving the poor, helping fellow mureeds, and spreading beneficial knowledge and good character.

In Tijaniyyah, service to Allah’s creation is among the noblest forms of khidmah.

The great masters of the Tijaniyyah taught that true service is not in carrying the Sheikh’s shoes or being physically close to him alone. Rather, it is in carrying his teachings in your heart and embodying them in your character. A Mureed may live far from his Sheikh yet be among his most beloved disciples because of his sincerity, obedience, and steadfastness.

“The greatest khidmah is to obey Allah, follow His Messenger ﷺ, uphold the Awrads of the Tariqa, and embody the noble character your Sheik teaches.”

May Allah grant us sincere service (khidmah), beautiful adab with our Mashayikh, and make us among those who serve Him with humility and love. Ameen Bijahi Rasulullahi 🙏🏽
