After turning down millions of rupees in the UK, a doctor returned to a deserted ward in Karachi — a journey that began with just eight beds has today become a source of hope for millions of poor patients receiving free medical treatment.

The glittering life in the UK, a huge income, and a secure future — Dr. Adib Rizvi had all of these within his reach. After nine years of hard work, his advanced training in urology and surgery could have secured him an outstanding career at any major hospital in the world. But in 1971, he made a decision that perhaps only one person in thousands would make — he left behind all those comforts and returned to Karachi, a city where poor patients were suffering without access to proper medical treatment.

When he arrived at Karachi Civil Hospital, the situation was heartbreaking — there was no dedicated operating table and no modern equipment, only an unequipped eight-bed unit in the Burns Ward. For an ordinary person, such a place might have symbolized hopelessness, but Dr. Adib Rizvi lit a flame of hope from that very beginning, one that continues to brighten millions of lives today. Gradually, dialysis, ultrasound, modern operating theaters, and eventually kidney transplantation in 1985 were added according to the needs of patients.

His strongest principle was that healthcare is not a privilege reserved for the wealthy; it is a basic human right. Regardless of religion, social class, age, or status, providing every patient with free and dignified treatment became the identity of SIUT. In 1992, this small unit evolved into the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), which today serves more than half a million patients every year. When he received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1998, he did not spend the prize money on himself. Instead, he donated it to the institution’s fund in memory of the patients who had lost their lives simply because they were too poor to afford treatment.

This is not merely the story of one doctor; it is the story of a commitment that chose serving humanity over personal wealth. Dr. Adib Rizvi proved that true success is not measured by the balance in a bank account, but by the millions of smiles and lives restored because of one’s efforts. People like him are a guiding light for our society, and it is the responsibility of the state to provide such institutions with greater resources and support so that this mission can continue for generations to come.
