Storytime with Captain Obvious: The Defender of the Already Known

Imagine it is 1896. You are a 22-year-old woman, madly in love with your boyfriend. He gets you pregnant, but he has absolutely no intention of marrying you, so they try to perform an illegal abortion. After several failed attempts in a dental office, he somehow decapitates you. They panic, throw your body down a well, and are hanged some time later.

Now, you might be saying right now, "But Captain Obvious, that is clearly a work of fiction."

But in 1896, Pearl Bryan was a young girl in her twenties who was madly in love and wanted to be with her boyfriend, the father of her child, Scott Jackson. Scott was a young dental student who had no interest in marrying her. As heartbreaking as that sounds, things get way darker for young Pearl. See, Scott had no interest in being a father or a husband.

Scott and his friend, Alonzo Walling, made several attempts to procure illegal abortions, and when those failed, they very brutally ended her.

The ghost stories surrounding these events often state that they panicked, threw her body in a well, and fled. That is not actually what happened.

Despite Scott and Alonzo's best efforts, the police successfully identified Pearl's body within days, based entirely on the unique, high-quality
manufacturing tracking stamps inside her shoes. That is right—she was identified by her shoes. The investigation found that when they could not perform the illegal abortions, they lured Pearl to an isolated place where they killed her. They were immediately caught, and they were sentenced to death by hanging in 1896.

This is a very tragically dark tale of a 22-year-old girl who just wanted to be loved, but the person she fell in love with would be the person who ended her life.
