There’s a Japanese saying:

“If you feel like you’re losing everything, remember, trees lose their leaves every year, yet they still stand tall and wait for better days to come.”

Goodreads reviews are unhinged. What do you mean “I gave this book a 1 star because the main character was unlikeable”. Excuse me, the author used her imagination and craft to create this irritating character, bringing about such strong emotions I want to yell at main character. I had rather an annoying character than a mary sue. That should get more than 1 star.

Ending my rant with - just finished Best Offer Wins. Wow, it was unhinged and a page turner!

Book 11: Disciplining the Soul (Riyadat al-Nafs) by Imam al-Ghazali رحمه الله

A man who cannot control his nafs will eventually be controlled by it.

This book is about self-discipline, desire, anger, ego, habits, and the struggle to bring the inner self under obedience to Allah ﷻ.

Before marriage, a man should learn that leadership does not begin with controlling others.

It begins with controlling himself.

His tongue, his gaze, his temper, his appetite, and his private choices.

Because a home needs a man with strength.

But real strength begins inside.

“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” —

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince

I love this book and every time I read it I seem to get new insights 😁

Dr. Yasir Qadhi and other thinkers have convincingly proven that Jewish Platonic thought did creep into islamic theology. John of Damascus influenced both the Ashari and Athari camps in their debates on the names and attributes of God. These camps got these ideas from Ja'd ibn Dirham, who was someone who was at the same social level as John. John of Damascus influenced Ja'd, who would later influence the Mu'tazilah. The Mu'tazilah influenced all the schools of kalaam. (Ashari, Maturidi) John or Yohanna (Eastern Orthodox) is famous for writing a refutation against Islam after studying with the Muslims. His thoughts, especially on Christianity, came from Philo, a Jewish intellectual. This proves that Plato (who influenced Philo) had his influence on early islamic aqidah polemic thought. And as for Aristotle, we already know he was the one who influenced the islamic philosophers, ibn rushd (grandfather) and ibn Sina. This means even imam ar razi and ibn taymiyyah were both influenced, at some level, by Jewish and Christian philosophy. God knows best.
