John Donne, Meditation XVII

We quote it as a humanist hymn to community. A call to connection, interdependence.
But Donne isn’t writing about community. He’s writing about death.

The line continues: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. The bell that tolls for another, tolls for you.

We’re not islands because we share the same shoreline and the same tide that will eventually take us all.

I wonder do we misread it because we need consolation, or because we’ve lost the habit of reading toward the end?

Would a divorced man automatically become a deal breaker for you if you have never been married before? 🤍

And if not, what things would you personally try to understand more deeply before considering him seriously for marriage?

Because honestly, divorce itself is not always the main issue. Sometimes it’s more about:

– emotional maturity
– accountability
– how he speaks about his past marriage
– communication style
– healing process
– relationship with family/ex-wife (if children involved)
– anger, responsibility, leadership, etc. 🕊️

I feel like situations like this require much deeper observation and discussion, especially for women seeking marriage seriously for the first time.
