The seriousness with which some Muslim families approach birthday celebrations and other celebrations they believe are ḥarām…
You would think they were ʿibādah. ⚠️
The decorations.
The planning.
The money spent.
The invitations.
The excitement.
The arguments when someone questions it.
Yet at the same time, some of the same gatherings may involve things Islam warns against:
🎵 Music
🕺🏽 Immodest behaviour
👗 Un-Islamic dress
📸 Showing off
💃🏽 Free mixing
🗣️ Backbiting and gossip
💰 Extravagance and waste
📱 Filming and posting everything for attention
SubḥānAllāh.
How easily we can become extremely serious about traditions while becoming careless about Ṣalāh, Qur’an, ḥayāʾ, sincerity and obedience to Allah.
My brothers and sisters, 📌
not everything that society calls “normal” is automatically pleasing to Allah.
Before we celebrate something, ask:
Is this pleasing to Allah?
Is it established in our Deen?
Am I doing this because Allah loves it—or simply because everyone else does it?
Let us not become more passionate about celebrations than we are about ʿibādah itself.
May Allah give us the wisdom to distinguish culture from Deen, permissible joy from disobedience, and sincere worship from following the crowd.
May Allah forgive us, guide us and keep us firm upon the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah.

It’s 1448 AH… and yet:
📖 The Qur’an is still the Qur’an.
☑️ Ḥalāl is still ḥalāl.
❌ Ḥarām is still ḥarām.
What changes with time is society.
Fashion changes.
Technology changes.
Languages change.
Trends change.
People's opinions change.
Civilizations rise and fall.
But we don't measure Islam by whatever happens to be popular at the moment.
No amount of modernization can make something Allah prohibited become permissible.
And likewise, something Allah made permissible does not become forbidden simply because society dislikes it.
Our standard is not:
“What does everyone do?”
Our standard is:
“What did Allah command?”
We should also be careful not to declare something ḥalāl or ḥarām merely because of our personal opinions. The ruling must be established from the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah, with proper understanding.
So as the years pass, let us not allow changing society to change our deen.
1448 AH or 1500 AH.... Allah is still Allah, the Qur’an remains the Qur’an, and truth does not become false simply because people stop following it.
May Allah keep us firm upon the truth, increase us in beneficial knowledge, and guide us to what pleases Him.
