Surah Al-Kafirun (Chapter 109) — English

Surah Al-Kafirun is the 109th chapter of the Holy Qur’an. It contains six verses and teaches Muslims to remain firm in their belief in Allah and worship Him alone.

English translation

Verse 1
Say, “O disbelievers,”

Verse 2
“I do not worship what you worship.”

Verse 3
“Nor are you worshippers of what I worship.”

Verse 4
“Nor will I be a worshipper of what you worship.”

Verse 5
“Nor will you be worshippers of what I worship.”

Verse 6
“For you is your religion, and for me is my religion.”

English transliteration

1. Qul yā ayyuhal-kāfirūn.
2. Lā a‘budu mā ta‘budūn.
3. Wa lā antum ‘ābidūna mā a‘bud.
4. Wa lā ana ‘ābidum mā ‘abadtum.
5. Wa lā antum ‘ābidūna mā a‘bud.
6. Lakum dīnukum wa liya dīn.

Main lessons of Surah Al-Kafirun

• Faith in Allah alone: Muslims worship Allah and do not associate partners with Him.

• Firmness in belief: Muslims should not compromise their core religious beliefs to please others.

• Religious distinction: The Surah makes clear that Islamic worship and beliefs are distinct from those of other religions.

• Respectful coexistence: The final verse establishes a distinction between religious beliefs; it does not instruct Muslims to mistreat people of other faiths.

Virtue: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited Surah Al-Kafirun and Surah Al-Ikhlas in certain prayers, including the Sunnah prayer before Fajr. This is reported in Sahih Muslim 726.

According to Islam, there is a hadith in which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ describes how many people will enter Paradise compared with those who do not.

Hadith: How many people will enter Paradise?
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that Allah will say to Adam عليه السلام to bring out the people of Hellfire from his descendants. When Adam asks how many, Allah

“From every one thousand, take out nine hundred and ninety-nine.”

This means 999 out of every 1,000 would be destined for the Fire in the context of that particular gathering, while one would be spared.

So, out of every 100 people, how many enter Paradise?

It would be misleading to convert this hadith into a definitive statistic of 99.9% going to Hell and 0.1% entering Paradise. The hadith describes a specific end-times event and includes further explanation that the overwhelming number of those taken out would be from Gog and Magog (Ya’juj and Ma’juj).

The Qur’an and Sunnah do not give us a simple, definitive percentage of all humanity who will ultimately enter Paradise.

What does the Qur’an say?

Allah says:

“And whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful.”

كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ ۗ وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوْنَ أُجُورَكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ۖ فَمَن زُحْزِحَ عَنِ النَّارِ وَأُدْخِلَ الْجَنَّةَ فَقَدْ فَازَ ۗ وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا مَتَاعُ الْغُرُور

English translation
“Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your full compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So whoever is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained success. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.”

Kullu nafsin dhā’iqatul-mawt, wa innamā tuwaffawna ujūrakum yawmal-qiyāmah. Faman zuhziha ‘anin-nāri wa-udkhilal-jannata faqad fāz. Wa mal-hayātud-dunyā illā matā‘ul-ghurūr.

Explanation of the verse

1. Every soul will taste death

Every human being, regardless of age, wealth, status or background, will eventually die. This life is temporary.

2. Everyone will receive their full recompense on the Day of Resurrection.

Allah will judge people with perfect justice. The ultimate outcome of our actions will become clear in the Hereafter

3. True success is being saved from Hellfire and admitted to Paradise.

The verse defines success differently from how the world often defines it. Wealth, career, marriage and worldly achievements are temporary; salvation in the Hereafter is the ultimate success.

4. The life of this world can be deceptive.

Worldly pleasures can distract people from their purpose and the Hereafter if they become more important than faith, good character and obedience to Allah.

What is the main lesson for Muslims?

This verse reminds us that the greatest success is not simply what we achieve in this world, but being saved from Hellfire and entering Jannah (Paradise).

It also encourages hope in Allah's mercy, sincere repentance and righteous deeds. We should strive to follow Islam while remembering that our final judgment belongs to Allah alone

May Allah grant us forgiveness, protect us from Hellfire and admit us into Jannatul-Firdaws. Ameen.
