📍I'm Just Meant To Be A Phase

The two weeks that stand at the threshold between last year’s sins and the hopes of the new year were the time that reunited me with my old friends. Some I had not met eye to eye with for almost eleven years.

The image of me as naïve and cheerful still lingers at the edge of their minds—another memory that serves as an indicator of my personality in the judgments of others, judgments that exist beyond my own awareness. Isn’t knowing oneself a process?

After my ADHD diagnosis last year, the oddities, multiplicities, and named uniqueness that make me who I am are still largely unknown. To them, I am the entertaining friend. I am the overly sensitive one. Even without intent, every meeting leaves me feeling as though I am standing on a stage, with a crowd of spectators waiting for any kind of performance from me.

But I also discovered one thing: it never lasts. Every film needs a climax and an ending. Every song needs a bridge and, eventually, its close. And in this mass-driven world of ours, every question demands an answer.

So what is my fate, if not merely to be a phase in other people’s lives? Because I have never thought about endings or conclusions, let alone answers. I am the quietest noise and the noisiest silence. I am not a solution. I am a void within a void.

Do I feel that this means anything? Hopefully—hopefully—someone notices that I am casting questions they will think about later.

A puzzle, a riddle, or perhaps just a fragment of laughter and tears that forces them to remember. I will still return to myself: a memory measured by a single event. Or a phase.
