When I Think of Palestine...
When I think of Palestine,
my heart grows weary.
My eyes become strangers to dryness.
My soul falls into a silence that words cannot keep.
And then another grief finds me.
Not theirs.
Mine.
Because I speak so often of loving them,
yet there are days when I forget to carry their names into my duaa.
How quickly life distracts me.
How easily comfort steals my attention.
And I wonder...
What kind of love forgets to pray?
Then I remember the stories I have heard.
Hearts carrying losses I cannot imagine.
Tongues that still remember Allah.
Eyes swollen with tears that still search for His mercy.
A certainty I admire from afar,
and quietly ask Allah to plant within me.
I do not long for their suffering.
I long for their steadfastness.
I long for a heart that runs to Allah before it runs to anyone else.
A heart that remembers Him before it remembers itself.
A faith that neither comfort can weaken nor hardship can steal.
Perhaps that is why Palestine lingers in me.
Not only because of what they have endured,
but because, through them, I have seen a glimpse of the believer I pray to become.
Ya Allah,
Do not let my love remain only in words.
Make it present in my du'as,
in my remembrance,
and in the quiet sincerity of a heart that never forgets its brothers and sisters.
And grant the people of Palestine relief, mercy, justice, and peace from You.
I love you all for the sake of Allah.
