Surah An-Nisa (4:34) is one of the most discussed verses in the Qur’an because it addresses family responsibilities and marital conflict. Different English translations reflect different understandings of the Arabic text.

“Men are the caretakers of women, as men have been provisioned by Allah over women and tasked with supporting them financially. And righteous women are devoutly obedient and, when alone, protective of what Allah has entrusted them with. And if you fear ill-conduct
from your women, advise them, then leave them alone in bed, then discipline them. But if they change their ways, do not be unjust to them. Surely Allah is Most High, All-Great.”

“Men are caretakers (qawwāmūn)”: Classical commentators generally understood this as men having responsibility for financial support and protection within the family, not unrestricted authority.

Righteous women” refers to wives who are faithful to Allah and who safeguard their marriage and family.

The verse then outlines a graduated approach to dealing with serious marital discord (nushūz):

1. Advise with sincere and respectful counsel.

2. Separate in bed as a sign of the seriousness of the conflict.

3. The final phrase has been understood differently by scholars. While many classical scholars interpreted it as a symbolic, non-injurious physical action with strict limitations, many contemporary scholars emphasize that, in light of the Prophet’s ﷺ example and other Islamic teachings, it should never be understood as permission for abuse or harm.

The Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ example

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The best of you are those who are best to their wives, and I am the best of you to my wives.”

He also never struck any of his wives. His life is the practical example of how Muslims should treat their spouses—with kindness, patience, mercy, and respect.

The Qur’an also says:

“Live with them in kindness.” (Surah An-Nisāʾ 4:19)

And:

“He placed between you affection and mercy.” (Surah Ar-Rūm 30:21)

Surah 4:34 is about maintaining family responsibility and addressing severe marital conflict through measured steps. It does not permit cruelty, abuse, or oppression. The broader teachings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah require spouses to treat one another with justice, compassion, and dignity.

True peace comes from entrusting all our wishes, decisions, and future plans to Almighty Allah. 🤲

May Allah bless each and every one of us with a righteous, loving, compatible, and truly beneficial life partner—someone who brings peace to our hearts and helps us grow closer to Him. ❤️

The Messenger of Allah PBUH said:

"There are three things; whoever possesses them will find the sweetness of faith:

1. That Allah and His Messenger are more beloved to him than anything else.
2. That he loves and hates only for the sake of Allah.
3. That being thrown into a blazing fire is more beloved to him than associating anything with Allah (committing shirk)."

“Say, [O Prophet], 'If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your spouses, your relatives, the wealth you have acquired, the commerce you fear declining, and the homes you cherish are more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger and striving in His cause, then wait until Allah brings about His command.'"
— (Qur'an 9:24)

There is no sweetness greater than loving Allah and His Messenger (s.a.w) above everything else.
Love for the sake of Allah, and let your loyalty be guided by faith alone.
Protect your tawḥid with all your heart, for nothing in this world is worth losing your Hereafter.
A believer would rather endure the fiercest fire of this life than meet Allah having associated partners with Him.

May Allah fill our hearts with the sweetness of true iman and keep us firm upon pure tawḥid until our final breath...(Ameen) 🤲
