Asalaamu alaykum,

I was recently advised by a brother on here not to say “Jummah Mubarak” as it’s “bidah”.

I asked my Sheikh about it and this is what he told me:

“There is no evidence in the Sunnah that our beloved Prophet ﷺ or his Companions would congratulate one another by saying “Jumu‘ah Mubarak.” Therefore, it should not be regarded as a Sunnah practice. It would be incorrect to make it such a common custom that people feel obliged to say it every week, as though something is missing from their religious practice if they do not.

At the same time, a believer is fortunate and blessed to witness another Friday and partake in the virtues and blessings of this noble day. Therefore, if someone says “Jumu‘ah Mubarak” simply as an expression of goodwill and joy on a blessed occasion, there is nothing inherently wrong with that. This is similar to exchanging greetings and congratulations during occasions such as Eid or Ramadan.

The key distinction is that it should be understood as a permissible expression of good wishes, not as an established Sunnah or a prescribed practice.”

I have never claimed it was a sunnah practice, and would never obligate others to say it.

I hope this clarifies my position and use of it as a greeting only, and an expression of goodwill and joy, inshaAllah.
