The Files That Really Matter
Logging onto Jamaa lately genuinely feels like I’ve wandered onto the set of Mean Girls. 😭
Every five minutes it’s:
“<CUSTOM_BOLD>He said…”
“She said…”
“Receipts incoming…”
“Part 12 drops after Maghrib.”
At this rate someone is going to announce, “<CUSTOM_BOLD>On Wednesdays we wear abayahs”
It’s absolutely exhausting and honestly, half of this drama wouldn’t even exist if people actually took basic steps to protect themselves and those around them. We’re constantly hearing warnings now about AI-generated abuse imagery. Parents are literally being advised not to post pictures of their children online. To be honest, even before AI, I never understood why complete strangers needed a front-row seat to your child’s life anyway.
You wouldn’t leave your house unlocked, go on holiday and then be shocked that someone burgled it. Yes, the thief is absolutely responsible for stealing. But locking your door is still common sense.
Likewise, predators are 100% responsible for their crimes. Nobody is saying otherwise. But protecting yourself is also your responsibility. If you don’t post your face publicly, you’ve already removed one huge avenue for identity theft, image misuse and all the weirdness that comes with the internet.
Before the keyboards catch fire, no, this isn’t another hijab debate. It’s even simpler than that.
Just don’t post the picture. Sometimes the strongest privacy setting isn’t hidden in your app settings. It’s called <CUSTOM_BOLD>self-restraint.
Ask yourself honestly:
Do I really need to post this?
Or have I become a little too attached to the likes, attention and validation that come with it?
As for all these Discord files, exposés and public trials that have followed since. What happened wasn’t nice for anyone involved. But somewhere along the way we’ve forgotten that allegations aren’t proof, screenshots don’t always tell the whole story, and social media certainly isn’t a courtroom.
Some people carefully examine the evidence before reaching a conclusion. Others see half a cropped screenshot and suddenly qualify for the FBI.
If you don’t have clear evidence, it’s probably safer to keep your fingers off the keyboard than risk carrying someone else’s sin on your own scales.
Backbiting isn’t entertainment. Slander isn’t content. And forwarding gossip doesn’t become halal because you added, “<CUSTOM_BOLD>Allah knows best.”
Here’s the part that really matters. You can _delete _comments. You can wipe your profile history. You can deactivate your account. You can even disappear from the internet altogether.
But the Angels never hit the delete button.
Every comment. Every repost. Every accusation. Every joke at someone else’s expense. Every word. <CUSTOM_BOLD>Recorded. Permanently.
One day, those records will be opened in front of the One who doesn’t need screenshots because He witnessed everything. Allah is Al-Hakim, the Perfect Judge. Justice never fails. If it isn’t settled in this dunya, it will be settled in the Akhirah.
The Day that lasts fifty thousand years isn’t going to revolve around who won an argument on Jamaa. Nobody will care who got ratioed. Nobody will care who had the last word. Nobody will be scrolling through notifications.
We’ll all be praying that our book of deeds is lighter on sins than our comment history. Maybe it’s time we spent less energy investigating strangers online and more time investigating our own hearts. Because the only file that will truly matter isn’t on Discord. It’s the one waiting to be placed in our hands.
May Allah protect our tongues, our keyboards and our hearts, forgive our shortcomings, and make our records a source of joy rather than regret.
Ameen. 🤲🏽
