Islam views marriage (nikah) as a sacred covenant and one of the most important institutions in life. It is not merely a legal contract or a romantic relationship; it is a partnership based on faith, responsibility, compassion, and mutual rights.

Here are some key aspects of how Islam views marriage:

  1. A solemn covenant
Allah describes marriage as a “solemn covenant” (mīthāqan ghalīẓan) in the Qur’an (4:21). This reflects the seriousness of the commitment each spouse makes to the other.

  2. A source of tranquillity
    Allah says:
“And among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may find tranquillity in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy”
    (Qur’an 30:21)

Marriage is intended to provide emotional security, comfort, love, and compassion.

  1. A means of protecting chastity

Islam encourages marriage as the lawful way to fulfil natural desires and protect men and women from sexual immorality. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised those who are able to marry to do so because it helps lower the gaze and guard one’s chastity.

  1. A partnership of mutual rights and responsibilities

Both husband and wife have rights and obligations. Among them are:

Treating one another with kindness and respect.

Being faithful and trustworthy.

Supporting one another emotionally and spiritually.

Consulting each other in family matters.

The husband providing financial maintenance according to his means.

The wife and husband cooperating to build a peaceful home.

Allah says:
“Live with them in kindness.” (Qur’an 4:19)

  1. A means of drawing closer to Allah

Marriage can be an act of worship when spouses fulfil their responsibilities sincerely. Caring for one another, being patient, raising children with good values, and maintaining a loving home are all rewarded by Allah.

  1. The foundation of the family

Islam regards the family as the cornerstone of society. Marriage provides a stable environment in which children can be raised with faith, good character, and security.

  1. Built on mercy rather than perfection

Islam recognizes that spouses will have differences. It encourages patience, forgiveness, and reconciliation rather than expecting either spouse to be perfect.

  1. Entered into freely

A valid Islamic marriage requires the free consent of both the man and the woman. Neither should be forced into marriage.

In summary, Islam views marriage as a lifelong commitment based on:

Faith in Allah.
Love, mercy, and tranquillity.
Mutual respect and compassion.
Shared rights and responsibilities.
Cooperation in worship and righteous living.

The goal is not only happiness in this world but also helping one another attain success in the Hereafter by living according to Allah’s guidance.

One of the worst experiences of my life is getting married here in Malaysia, I don't generalize the rule to all girls, but there should be awareness lessons for Muslim girls about the role of men and women in married life, what are the individual and married responsibilities between them
