With just three subspecies spread across the Middle East and North Africa and Central Asia, they’re incredibly difficult to find. They live in some of the most remote deserts, are mostly active at night, and many wildlife photographers spend years dreaming of seeing one in the wild. Before I arrived in Morocco, something extraordinary had happened. A family of five sand cat kittens had been discovered in a remote desert location. They stayed there for a few weeks, offering an incredibly rare glimpse into the early life of one of the world’s most secretive cats. But by the time I got there, the story had already changed. All of them had already dispersed except this young one. He was clearly left behind which is something that happens sometimes in the wild! 🥲 No one knows what will happen to him after that. It’s a sad thought, but it’s also the reality of life in the wild. Young animals don’t all survive, and nature doesn’t promise happy endings. Every encounter is fleeting, every life uncertain. Knowing the story behind this little sand cat made photographing him even more meaningful.
