Praise be to Allah, the One Who does not resemble any of the created things.

These are the major Hadith masters and theologians who explained Hadith al-Nuzul and preserved tanzih - that Allah does not resemble creation:

1. Imam Malik ibn Anas (d. 179H)
   When asked about the hadith, he said: نزول رحمة وأمر لا نزول نقلة - "It is a descent of mercy and order, not a descent of movement and transfer." This was narrated by al-Bayhaqi and Ibn 'Abd al-Barr.

2. Imam Ibn Furak al-Ash'ari (d. 406H)
   He is the earliest to transmit the hadith with يُنْزِلُ / yunzilu - "Allah causes an angel to descend." He said the meaning becomes clear with this reading: Allah orders an angel to descend to the lowest heaven and call out.

3. Imam Abu Bakr Ibn al-'Arabi al-Maliki (d. 543H)
   Reported Ibn Furak's reading and said the hadith must be understood as Allah's mercy and answer being close, not bodily descent, because movement and occupying a place are impossible for Allah.

4. Imam al-Bayhaqi (d. 458H) - al-Asma' wa al-Sifat
   Collected all the wordings, including the wording of an-Nasa'i with the munad / announcer, and said: The descent is either understood as the descent of His order, His mercy, or His angel. And whoever narrates it as yanzilu should say it is without kayf and without tashbih.

5. Imam al-Khattabi (d. 388H) - Ma'alim al-Sunan
   Said: This hadith is from the mutashabih, and the Salaf left its modality to Allah. From the Khalaf, it is interpreted as the time of acceptance - Allah is described as descending in the sense that His mercy, His acceptance and His help draw near to the servant at that hour.

6. Imam an-Nawawi (d. 676H) - Sharh Muslim
   Explained: There are two madhhab among Ahl al-Sunnah - Tafwid (we believe in it and we leave the how to Allah while negating tashbih) and Ta'wil (we interpret it with what befits Allah, such as the descent of mercy, or of an angel calling out on His behalf).

7. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani (d. 852H) - Fath al-Bari
   Quoted all the above and said: The narration with يُنْزِلُ is supported by the hadith of an-Nasa'i: "Verily Allah gives respite until half the night passes, then He orders an announcer to call..." He also cited al-Baydawi: Since descent is a corporeal attribute, and Allah is free of that, the meaning is a noble, spiritual descent - the manifestation of mercy.

8. Imam al-Qurtubi (d. 671H) - al-Mufhim
   Said: It is not meant by descent to be a transfer from a high place to a low place, for that is impossible for Allah. Rather it is an expression of the nearness of Allah's mercy, answer, and favor to those who supplicate at that time.
