Two years.Seven hundred and thirty days.And 🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦 is still not cured of this one addiction.
For 🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦,weekends are not for going to the mall for recreation or simply unwinding at a trendy coffee shop.Weekends are a sacred ritual where she transforms into a professional marathon runner,not on a running track,but on a plush mattress draped in a thick blanket,with a smartphone in hand that is never unplugged from a power bank.
In a single week,without missing a beat,she devours 20 to 25 Korean drama titles.Calculated daily,🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦 can consume 3 to 4 K-dramas a day.Yet,the average duration per film or finale episode ranges from two to over three hours.
Her eyes are glued to the screen,ignoring the outside world.The consequence?Don't even ask about her biological schedule.Lunch is often skipped just like that.Afternoon nap?That term has been deleted from her life's dictionary since two years ago.
The worst part is her sleeping schedule.If back then,right after the Isha prayer,🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦 would fall asleep in dreamland by 9 PM at the latest,now the scenario has changed drastically.Only at 1 AM does she finally close the streaming app.
Yet,nature has its own way of collecting dues.🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦 knows the risks all too well : sleep deprivation at night results in a throbbing headache the next morning.Not to mention a sore body from curling up all day without an ergonomic posture.But what can she do?The moment her finger presses the play button for a drama that drains her emotions and gets on her nerves,her rational logic flies off who knows where.
CHAPTER 2 : Cliched Formulas That Make You Cringe
Unfortunately,the plotlines served up by the directors from the Land of the Ginseng can actually be guessed from the very first minute.The patterns are always the same :
Madly in love,brutally in love,down to deadly gazes charged with electricity.
The mandatory slip-and-fall scene that ends with the male lead dramatically catching the female character,their faces just a centimeter apart.
And of course,the climax always ends in bed with aesthetic dim-lighting cinematography.
"The storyline is clichéd,dry,and stale!" 🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦 murmurs to herself with an annoyed grumble.
She knows the exact next scene before the actors even speak their lines.Nothing is new.The locations might change,the character names might be swapped,but the core remains the same : predictable and lacking original surprises.
Yet,this is where the irony lies.🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦 often laughs at herself,thinking about her own foolishness. "I'm so stupid,why am I still not bored?" her inner self rebels.
The honest yet amusing answer : Not because she wants to be their girlfriend,but because 🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦 fantasizes about being the actress's stuntwoman!Why?So she can be kissed,hugged tightly,and act out the bed scenes with the actor in person!HAHAHA.
She might be of mature age,but when watching K-dramas,her behavior resembles a fickle teenager experiencing a crush.Her reason is simple yet honest : 🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦 is genuinely mesmerized by the visuals of the male leads.Flawless handsome faces with sharp jawlines,paired with perfectly athletic bodies and six-pack abs sculpted beautifully beneath a half-open office shirt.Perfect!
Although sometimes,she gets annoyed seeing the actors' plastic surgery faces. “Oh my god,are these humans or dolls?So smooth,their noses are so sharp,” she grumbles while shaking her head.
CHAPTER 3 : Screaming Logic and Salvation Snacks
Because of her acute crush on K-dramas,her usual background entertainment that used to accompany her relaxation time,like Upin & Ipin,the mischievous Shinchan,to the legendary cat-and-mouse chases of Tom & Jerry,was officially kicked out of the playlist.Those cartoons were sidelined because they didn't have fresh new episodes,while K-dramas update every week with thousands of menu choices.
Even though her eyes are spoiled by the visuals of Korean gods,it doesn't mean 🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦 escapes emotional turmoil.Often,scenes in K-dramas make her want to hurl her precious phone onto the floor :
Squatting Logic #1 : There are a platoon's worth of villains,carrying clubs,meat cleavers,and even bazookas.The guy fights them all off single-handedly wearing only office trousers and no shirt.The result?All the villains go down,while the guy's hair remains perfectly sleek without a single strand moving!
Squatting Logic #2 : A horrific car crash leaves the vehicle flipped over into a total wreck,and the guy is dying, bleeding from the head.But with his remaining inner energy,he is still able to carry the girl,who only has a minor scratch on her elbow.Damn,is that guy made of steel and iron muscles or is he the reincarnation of Hercules?!
Emotional?Absolutely!The urge to curse out the director directly is unbearable.
But what is 🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦's escape?Snacks and All-Purpose Iced Drinks!
If she watches in the morning,her companion is warm fried snacks (with at least five bird's eye chilies) accompanied by warm plain tea or warm milk tea.
If it's daytime,having ICE in her stomach is mandatory.Be it iced cappuccino,fresh fruit ice,avocado juice,or just ice cubes mixed with plain water,as long as there is a chilling sensation in her throat.
Especially for the nighttime session,the situation is slightly different.🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦 applies the "Diet Fasting" principle from 6 PM to 6 AM the next morning.Consequently,she doesn't touch snacks.Just lying comfortably on the bed (rebahan style),hugging a bolster or her favorite doll,while enjoying the romantic suffering of the characters on the glass screen.
CHAPTER 4 : The Azan is Non-Negotiable!
Wait,don't get the wrong idea just yet.Even though 🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦 is the type of girl who loves to skip lunch and ignore her sleep schedule just to gaze at the charm of her idol actors,she has one life principle that cannot be shaken by any galactic force whatsoever.
As soon as the Azan (call to prayer) echoes,the K-drama is PAUSED instantly!
It doesn't matter if the oppa is taking off his shirt or if the most romantic scene is unfolding on the screen,the pause button is absolute.
For 🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦,worldly matters,dramas,and oppa's handsomeness come in secondary.Standing before the Creator always comes first!Alhamdulillah,so far she has never missed her obligation.The only things she frequently forgets and misses are her lunch and her afternoon nap,kwkwkw ....
🇨🇭🇮🇰🇦 lets out a long sigh,staring at her phone screen displaying a handsome actor with a deadly smile.She chuckles softly at her own foolishness.
"I'm so stupid,why do I still want to watch this K-drama ...." her sad inner self thinks while continuing to press the Next Episode button
