Furusawa, a 49-year-old carpenter and actor, has been taking to busy urban hubs like Shinjuku and Shibuya every day since October 2023. Kneeling on sidewalks draped in a keffiyeh and holding a Palestinian flag, he spends hours shouting slogans such as "Free Palestine," "Stop the Genocide," and "Ceasefire Now". In an earlier interview with Anadolu Agency, Furusawa said that while international tourists often pause to express solidarity or take videos, the vast majority of local pedestrians walk past him in silence or act as if he does not exist. "Most people who see me remain indifferent," Furusawa said. "Even when I stand in the middle of the street and raise my voice, most people act as though I don't exist... But no matter how much people may call it 'an empty ideal,' I will continue to say: 'Protect people. Treat people as human beings. Defend human rights.'" Furusawa noted that societal conformity and a hesitance to engage with sensitive geopolitical issues often lead Japanese citizens to ignore public demonstrations. Despite the isolation, his solo vigils have resonated heavily online, where recorded clips of his quiet, persistent demonstrations have gathered hundreds of thousands of followers across social media platforms globally."
