When They Finally Go Home
One day, In Shaa Allah,
they will go home.
Not the kind of home we speak about
when we say,
“I miss home.”
A home they have carried inside their hearts
through every road that was not theirs,
every night that felt too long,
every place that never quite felt like home.
One day,
a child will open a door
and not wonder how long they will be allowed to stay.
A mother will arrange cups on a table
without counting how many are missing.
A father will sit in the evening
and listen to his children make noise,
the beautiful kind of noise
that only feels ordinary
when life is safe.
Someone will knead dough for bread
and the smell will travel through the house,
calling everyone to the kitchen.
Someone will spread a prayer mat
in the corner where it has always belonged.
Someone will hang clothes outside
and complain about the dust.
And nobody will think
that these are miracles.
That is the kind of peace I pray for them.
A peace so ordinary
they forget they once begged for it.
A morning without fear.
An evening without counting footsteps.
A night without wondering
who will still be there when the sun rises.
One day,
a child will run through a street
without knowing that the street was once a place of fear.
They will know it only as home.
And perhaps that will be the sweetest victory of all.
Not that the world finally remembers their suffering,
but that their children no longer have to.
May Allah return to them
the warmth of familiar doors,
the comfort of familiar voices,
the laughter that once filled their homes,
and the people whose absence has left rooms too quiet.
May He rebuild what was destroyed,
heal what was broken,
and replace every frightening memory
with a gentler one.
And when they finally go home,
may the first thing they feel
not be relief,
but peace.
The kind of peace that makes the heart forget
how long it spent waiting for it.
Ya Allah,
give them homes where children can grow old,
tables where families can gather,
streets where laughter can wander freely,
and nights so peaceful
that sleep no longer feels like a prayer for survival.
Let their children inherit
more than stories of what was lost.
Let them inherit a life.
A beautiful,
ordinary,
safe life.
A life where tomorrow is not feared,
but welcomed.
Ameen.
