THE SINGLE PARENT NOBODY SEES
Everyone says:
“Take care of yourself.”
“Put your health first.”
“You can’t pour from an empty cup.”
Beautiful advice.
But let me ask something nobody talks about:
WHO IS GOING TO TAKE CARE OF THE CHILDREN WHILE THE SINGLE PARENT TAKES CARE OF THEMSELVES?
What if there is no supportive co-parent?
No grandparents.
No siblings nearby.
No trusted friend who can take the kids for a few hours.
And no money for childcare.
What then?
Do they go to the doctor while their children wait in the car?
Do they exercise at midnight after everyone is asleep?
Do they rest when they’re sick?
Do they simply ignore their own health because someone still has to make dinner, pack lunches, do homework, clean the house, pay the bills and show up tomorrow morning?
This is the part of single parenting people don’t see.
Sometimes the parent isn’t neglecting themselves because they don’t care about their health.
They’re neglecting themselves because there is literally nobody else to carry the load.
And then society wonders why that parent is exhausted.
Why they’re gaining weight.
Why they’re burned out.
Why they look tired.
Why they don’t have hobbies.
Why they aren’t “doing more for themselves.”
Maybe stop asking:
“Why don’t you take care of yourself?”
And start asking:
“What would you need from us to make that possible?”
Because single parents don’t always need another motivational quote.
They need PRACTICAL SUPPORT.
An hour of childcare.
A meal.
A ride to an appointment.
Someone to watch the kids while they sleep.
Someone to say, “I’ve got the children. Go take care of yourself.”
And if you’re a single parent surviving without a village:
Your exhaustion doesn’t mean you’re failing.
You may simply be carrying a load that was never meant to be carried by one person.
And maybe the real conversation we need to have isn’t about how single parents can “do better.”
Maybe it’s about why so many of them are forced to do EVERYTHING alone.
If you’ve ever been that parent, you already know.
