Is there something wrong with the job..or something we need to work on within ourselves?

Today, during one of my sessions with a client, she shared something that really made me think.

She was telling me how, even after offering a very good salary package, she was finding it difficult to retain new staff. Some would leave without even giving prior notice.

She asked me, “What is the reason for this? My old staff are happy with me. But the new staff are not ready to take the effort to learn something, adapt, and stick around.”

Is this a problem with the current generation?

Or is it simply a shift in mentality and mindset?

This conversation made me think about the job-hopping culture that exists today.

If one job doesn't seem good enough, there is always another opportunity waiting.

And interestingly, I see a similar mentality even in relationships.

With so many options available, some people keep looking for a “better” potential partner instead of investing in and growing through one relationship.

The same concept seems to be entering the workplace.

The grass always seems greener on the other side.

But from my personal experience, there is a lot of growth that comes from learning to stay, adapt, develop your skills, and grow within an environment.

That doesn't mean you should stay in every job.

There is a very clear distinction between a toxic workplace, where leaving may genuinely be necessary, and a normal workplace, where you may simply need to develop your skills, understand the environment, face challenges, and create a strong foundation for yourself.

And this is where I believe mentors have an important role to play.

Before advising someone to leave a job, we need to help them analyse:

Is the problem really the workplace?
Or is there something within themselves that they need to work on?

Because sometimes, changing the environment changes everything.

And sometimes, changing yourself changes everything.

Ultimately, it comes down to your mindset, your skill level, and the way you choose to approach the challenges in front of you.

Maybe the answer isn't always to find greener grass.

Maybe sometimes, we need to learn how to make the grass we're standing on greener.
