BREAKING! The Saudi Public Prosecution is seeking the death penalty against Islamic scholar Sheikh Abdul Aziz al-Tarafe, who is currently being held in solitary confinement in al-Ha’ir prison in Riyadh.

al-Tarife was arrested in late April 2016 following online posts criticising Saudi-owned media channel Al Arabiya and certain religious practices of the state.

Most of the people who are trying to cause random drama on muzz (trying to start controversy on anyone's wall (just to create discussion), attacking religious activists, defending bad women vs. Men, defending bad men vs. Women, attacking Muslim scholars, defending atheists lol my new favorite, constantly telling girls to block good men, constantly telling guys to block good girls, people starting controversial regurgitated discussions, mahr and four wives), you realize the sad truth...big accounts are behind some of this anti islam and anti marriage drama. We allow people to have multiple accounts. Some with the same names lol. Only muzz. Nothing like muzz. Its like your family...can't live with them and cannot live without them. God knows best.

Talk by Yasir Qadhi on The Debate That Shaped Pakistan.

I would often think about the politics surrounding the formation of Pakistan. Why did so many Muslim Indians remain in India rather than move to the country that had been created as a homeland for Muslims? Tbh, I’m still not completely clear on all of this. I think part of my confusion comes from viewing Partition too simply, as though Pakistan was created with the expectation that all the Muslims of India would move there, when that wasn’t really the case.

I was also surprised by Maulana Maududi’s stance on nationalism. I had assumed that, because he was such an influential Islamic thinker in Pakistan, he would naturally have supported Muslim nationalism and the creation of Pakistan. But his position was much more nuanced. He rejected nationalism itself as the basis of political identity, arguing that Muslims shouldn’t simply seek political sovereignty because they were a Muslim ‘nation.’ Instead, he believed that ultimate sovereignty belongs to Allah SWA rather than to a nation, parliament, king, or people acting without limits. Is this a bit idealistic? I’m not sure?

But his view does resonate with me. Because I don’t believe in nationalism, i actually believe in an Islamic state. The idea that an Islamic state shouldn’t simply be a country where Muslims happen are in power, but a political system in which human authority remains subordinate to Allah and Islamic law, makes much more sense to me. In that sense, Maududi’s position was quite different from simply saying, “Muslims need their own country.” A Muslim-majority country, in his view, wasn’t necessarily the same thing as an Islamic state.

I’m still unsure about the bit about the Hindu being in charge and the “throne of Allah,” though. I’d like to understand exactly what Maududi meant when discussing non-Muslim rulers, that bit was confusing.
