The Five Pillars of Islam: A Simple Guide for Reverts

The Five Pillars of Islam are the five fundamental acts of worship that form the foundation of a Muslim's life. They help Muslims develop their relationship with Allah, practise their faith, and live with purpose, gratitude and good character.

For someone who has recently embraced Islam (a revert), these pillars provide a starting point for learning and practising the religion step by step.

  1. Shahada — Declaration of Faith
Believing in Allah and His Messenger
The Shahada is the testimony that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah.

In Arabic:
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ م

Transliteration: Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah.

Meaning: “I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

Explanation for reverts: This is the foundation of Islam. It means believing in the oneness of Allah, worshipping Him alone, and accepting Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as His final Messenger. A person enters Islam by sincerely believing and declaring this testimony.

  1. Salah — The Five Daily Prayers
    Connecting with Allah every day
Muslims perform five obligatory prayers each day:

•Fajr: Dawn
•Dhuhr: Midday
•Asr: Afternoon
•Maghrib: After sunset
•Isha: Night

Explanation: Salah provides regular opportunities to remember Allah, ask for guidance, express gratitude and seek forgiveness. Muslims learn the prayer movements, recitations and purification gradually. A new Muslim should focus on learning correctly without feeling overwhelmed by everything at once.

  1. Zakat — Obligatory Charity
Purifying wealth and helping those in need
Zakat is an obligatory contribution from qualifying wealth to eligible recipients, including people in poverty.

Islam teaches that wealth is a trust from Allah and that people in need have rights over some of the wealth held by those who qualify to pay Zakat. It encourages generosity, social responsibility and compassion.

Zakat is generally calculated at 2.5% of qualifying savings and certain other wealth held for a lunar year, when the relevant conditions are met. Not everyone has to pay it; eligibility depends on the type and amount of wealth. Zakat is different from voluntary charity (Sadaqah).

  1. Sawm — Fasting During Ramadan

Developing self-discipline and God-consciousness

During Ramadan, adult Muslims who are able and not exempt from fasting abstain from food, drink and marital sexual relations from dawn until sunset.

Fasting is not simply about going without food and water. It helps Muslims develop patience, self-control, gratitude and empathy for people experiencing hunger. Muslims also strive to avoid lying, gossip, anger and other harmful behaviour.

People who are ill, travelling or otherwise eligible for an exemption may have different rulings, including making up fasts later or other provisions where applicable.

  1. Hajj — Pilgrimage to Makkah

A journey of worship and devotion

Hajj is the pilgrimage to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, performed during its designated days in the Islamic calendar

Hajj brings Muslims from different countries and backgrounds together to worship Allah. It reminds Muslims of human equality, humility, sacrifice and the unity of the Muslim community.

Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime for a Muslim who has the physical and financial ability to undertake it, subject to the relevant conditions. Someone who cannot afford or manage the journey is not expected to undertake it while unable

  1. Shahada Faith and belief in Allah's oneness

  2. Salah Regular worship and remembrance of Allah

  3. Zakat Generosity and responsibility towards others

  4. Sawm Patience, discipline and self-control

  5. Hajj Unity, humility and devotion

Advice for someone who has recently embraced Islam

• Take it step by step. You do not need to master every aspect of Islam immediately.

• Learn how to pray. Work towards performing the five daily prayers and seek help from a knowledgeable, trustworthy Muslim or teacher

• Read the Qur'an with its meaning. Start with short chapters and a reliable English translation.

• Ask questions without embarrassment. Learning is a continuous process, and it is appropriate to seek clarification

• Practise Islam sincerely. Focus on your relationship with Allah and on developing good character rather than comparing yourself with other Muslims.

Allah says in the Qur'an:
“Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.” — Qur'an 2:286

This verse offers reassurance that Allah knows each person's circumstances and capacity.

The main message for a revert: Islam is a journey of faith, learning and worship. Begin with sincere belief, build your prayers and understanding gradually, and continue striving to please Allah.

The Family of Imran: Chapter 3 of the Quran

  1. Those to whom the people have said, “The people have mobilized against you, so fear them.” But this only increased them in faith, and they said, “God is enough for us; He is the Excellent Protector.”

  2. So they came back with grace from God, and bounty, and no harm having touched them. They pursued what pleases God. God possesses immense grace.

  3. That is only Satan frightening his partisans; so do not fear them, but fear Me, if you are believers.

  4. And do not be saddened by those who rush into disbelief. They will not harm God in the least. God desires to give them no share in the Hereafter. A terrible torment awaits them.

  5. Those who exchange blasphemy for faith will not harm God in the least. A painful torment awaits them.

  6. Those who disbelieve should not assume that We respite them for their own good. In fact, We only respite them so that they may increase in sinfulness. A humiliating torment awaits them

  7. God will not leave the believers as you are, without distinguishing the wicked from the sincere. Nor will God inform you of the future, but God elects from among His messengers whom He wills. So believe in God and His messengers. If you believe and practice piety, you will have a splendid reward.

  8. Those who withhold what God has given them of his bounty should not assume that is good for them. In fact, it is bad for them. They will be encircled by their hoardings on the Day of Resurrection. To God belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth, and God is well acquainted with what you do.

  9. God has heard the statement of those who said, “God is poor, and we are rich.” We will write down what they said, and their wrongful killing of the prophets; and We will say, “Taste the torment of the burning.”

  10. “This is on account of what your hands have forwarded, and because God is not unjust towards the creatures.”

  11. Those who said, “God has made a covenant with us, that we shall not believe in any messenger unless he brings us an offering to be consumed by fire.” Say, “Messengers have come to you before me with proofs, and with what you asked for; so why did you assassinate them, if you are truthful?”

  12. If they accuse you of lying, messengers before you were accused of lying. They came with the proofs, and the Psalms, and the Illuminating Scripture.

  13. Every soul will have a taste of death, and you will receive your recompense on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever is swayed from the Fire, and admitted to Paradise, has won. The life of this world is merely enjoyment of delusion.

  14. You will be tested through your possessions and your persons; and you will hear from those who received the Scripture before you, and from the idol worshipers, much abuse. But if you persevere and lead a righteous life—that indeed is a mark of great determination.

  15. God received a pledge from those who were given the Scripture: “You shall proclaim it to the people, and not conceal it.” But they disregarded it behind their backs, and exchanged it for a small price. What a miserable exchange they made.

  16. Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have done, and love to be praised for what they have not done—do not think they can evade the punishment. They will have a painful punishment.

  17. To God belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth. God has power over all things.

  18. In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, are signs for people of understanding.

  19. Those who remember God while standing, and sitting, and on their sides; and they reflect upon the creation of the heavens and the earth: “Our Lord, You did not create this in vain, glory to You, so protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

  20. “Our Lord, whomever You commit to the Fire, You have disgraced. The wrongdoers will have no helpers.”

  21. “Our Lord, we have heard a caller calling to the faith: `Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord! Forgive us our sins, and remit our misdeeds, and make us die in the company of the virtuous.”

  22. “Our Lord, and give us what You have promised us through Your messengers, and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Surely You never break a promise.”

  23. And so their Lord answered them: “I will not waste the work of any worker among you, whether male or female. You are one of another. For those who emigrated, and were expelled from their homes, and were persecuted because of Me, and fought and were killed—I will remit for them their sins, and will admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow—a reward from God. With God is the ultimate reward.”

  24. Do not be impressed by the disbelievers’ movements in the land.

  25. A brief enjoyment, then their abode is Hell. What a miserable resort.

  26. As for those who feared their Lord: for them will be gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever—hospitality from God. What God possesses is best for the just.

  27. Among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in God, and in what was revealed to you, and in what was revealed to them. They are humble before God, and they do not sell God’s revelations for a cheap price. These will have their reward with their Lord. God is swift in reckoning.

  28. O you who believe! Be patient, and advocate patience, and be united, and revere God, so that you may thrive.

As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, my dear brothers and sisters!

I’m so happy to know that you have reverted to Islam. I’m also happy that you have taken this important step in your life. I also reverted to Islam in Ukraine 🇺🇦, alhamdulillah, and now I live in Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦. However, my parents are of Greek and German descent.

What about you? What is your ethnic background?

And our success is only through Allah. I ask Allah to bless us and grant us goodness and true guidance in this journey. Ameen.
