At work, I was given a project to build an AI agent that automates QA testing and ATF. I took it on as a personal challenge because it's exactly the kind of work I love: hands on, technical, and full of learning. When I presented the prototype, my managers were impressed. Then one of them joked that the goal was to get rid of the QA guy so things could move faster. He quickly added that he was kidding and that the tool was really meant to help QA testers by laying out their steps and saving them time.
Last night I finished the final version. It runs smoothly, and it's going to be pitched to clients. By any measure, that's a win. But that comment has stayed with me. I can't shake the feeling that I've built something that will eventually cost people their jobs. Maybe not next week or next month, but someday. I could tell myself that if I hadn't built it, someone else would have, and that's probably true. But it doesn't change the fact that it was me. I'm proud of what I made and uneasy about what it might mean, and I don't know how to hold both of those at once.
