Question for hospitality professionals
Housekeeping Manager with medium to senior experience earning 45K EGP per month in Egypt
Is this considered a good salary for the current market in Egypt?
I would like to know what is the average salary for the same position in your country (Gulf, Europe, etc.)?

If you’re fresh out of college with a bachelor’s degree in IT, do companies here in the US train you or show you how their codebase works or is organized, or what the product does? Or pair program with you to show you things?

At big tech companies or small companies.

This is my only worry, and main reason I’ve been putting off applying for software engineer jobs. Otherwise I can learn everything else very easily.

Just some advice for btoehrs and sisters in the middle of their career, changing careers, or currently between jobs: never stop learning. 📚

One thing I've learned over the years is that a degree can give you a foundation, but it doesn't guarantee you a job, and it certainly doesn't guarantee you'll be good at what you do.

I spent over a decade in Finance and Accounting, eventually working in senior positions including Controller and Director of Finance. I've worked with different businesses and even some well-known people along the way.

Yet I also met people with Master's degrees and CPAs who struggled with basic reconciliations or understanding how financial statements actually connected. That's when I realized there is a huge difference between having credentials and knowing how to solve real-world problems.

Early in my career, I opened my own accounting and tax practice. Part of the reason was business, but a big part was learning. Every individual and business brought a different situation, forcing me to research, understand and solve something new.

Eventually that same curiosity pulled me deeper into technology. I started learning financial application development, ERP systems, databases, integrations, automation and coding. Over time, Finance + Accounting + Technology became interconnected rather than separate careers for me. And I still haven't stopped.

Outside of my regular day job, I own multiple businesses. I've spent years studying financial markets, investing, trading, algorithms and how technology can be used to analyze information and make better decisions. I've been building my own trading and investment applications, experimenting with different ideas, writing code and learning from everything that works...and everything that doesn't.

And lately I've been exploring AI and how it can change the way we work, learn, invest, build businesses and solve everyday problems.

I also deliberately learn things that have absolutely nothing to do with my profession, such as Youtube/TikTok. Science, photography, travel, history, whatever catches my curiosity. Sometimes the most useful ideas come from connecting knowledge from completely different areas.

That's probably the biggest lesson my career has taught me: never become too comfortable with what you already know.

If you're between jobs, don't treat that period as wasted time. Learn something. Build something. Take a course. Work toward a certification. Start a small project. Experiment with an idea you've been putting off.

Your degree tells people what you studied. What you continue teaching yourself determines how far you can grow.

Keep learning. Keep building. Keep experimenting. Keep evolving.

You never know where that curiosity will take you next. InshaAllah. 🌱💻📈
