A new UN-backed study from UNU-INWEH (released in early June 2026) warns that AI’s rapid growth could place huge pressure on global resources by 2030.
It estimates that AI and data centers could use around 9.3 trillion litres of water every year — equal to the basic annual water needs of about 1.3 billion people.
This demand is linked to a projected rise in data center electricity use to about 945 TWh by 2030, driven by AI expansion. The water is used both directly for cooling servers and indirectly through electricity generation.
The report also warns that AI could consume about 3% of global electricity, with emissions comparable to the 'entire United Kingdom'. Data centers already use as much power as a country like Saudi Arabia, and could expand to a footprint approaching the size of 10 Mexico Cities.
Researchers highlight a possible “Jevons Paradox” effect — where more efficient AI systems become cheaper to run, leading to even higher overall usage and resource demand.
The study says we need more transparency, better rules, and greener AI systems. It also points out that most big AI data centers are in the United States and China.
