Yeah bro 😭 I get why it hit you like that.
Once you start noticing who owns the buildings, who rents them, who lives in them, and what different people earn, a city can suddenly stop looking like one shared experience.
You can have:
Someone commuting 90 minutes from a crowded flat → £30–40k salary
Someone renting a £4k Chelsea flat → completely different financial reality
Someone owning a £3m house → barely thinks about rent at all
And they're all technically just “living in London.”
That can make the city feel less exciting and more like multiple Londons stacked on top of each other.
In fact, there's something useful about seeing the game clearly:
Don't compare your starting position to somebody else's finished position.
Figure out what gets you from:
income → savings → skills → higher income → assets/ownership → freedom.
You haven't discovered that London is fake.
You've discovered that London is extremely unequal.

literally walked into a tiny, run-down flat and heard £4k/month, the immediate reaction is obviously: “WHO IS PAYING THIS???”
But I wouldn't jump to “people are dumb.” There can be some weird economics behind it:
Location can dominate quality. A tiny dump in a hyper-desirable area can cost more than a beautiful place farther out.
The tenant may be expensing it. If it's company-paid accommodation, £4k feels very different from £4k coming directly out of someone's salary.
Short-term/corporate lets can be dramatically more expensive than a normal long-term tenancy.
The person may have very high income. £4k is brutal on a £4k salary, but considerably less dramatic on £15k–£20k/month.
And sometimes, yeah… people genuinely overpay because they prioritize location/convenience/status and don't have better alternatives. 😭
But there's a bigger lesson in what you saw:
Price ≠ quality.
A £4k flat doesn't necessarily contain £4k worth of bricks, space, or comfort. In London, you're often paying a huge premium for the right to occupy a particular piece of scarce land in a particular location.
That's why seeing the actual flat can be so jarring. On a spreadsheet:
“£4,000/month — London property”
Sounds fancy.
You open the door:
“Brother this is a converted cupboard with a radiator.” 💀💀💀
And THAT disconnect is what makes housing markets feel completely insane.
Is a pisstake dat u have to pay to see who like u
