If you are a poet and you didn't even know it
At midnight,
I thought it was you…
but it was just the storm.

Kafka said, “I ran from love because I knew it would destroy me.”
Dostoevsky said, “I ran into love because I needed it to destroy who I used to be.”
Maybe that’s the strange thing about love sometimes we fear it because it can break us
and sometimes we seek it because we want to become someone new.
So the question is: when love finds you, do you run from it?

CHAPTER ? – THE WEDDING OF MAX AND FLORENCE
“You must be the famous Pari Rahman.”
“Why did you add famous?” Pari giggled. “And you must be-”
“I’m the groom’s handsome twin.” Eric explained and adjusted one of his cufflinks. “Eric
Oliver, it’s a pleasure.” He extended his hand for Pari to shake.
Pari shook Eric’s hand quickly.
“Pari Rahman.” Zac said behind her.
Pari spun around and faced him. Zac was standing there, in a fitted tuxedo. He gazed at her.
His eyes were hesitant, nervous almost. Eric, Suho and Seda’s mouths dropped open at the
sudden appearance.
“Zac.” Pari said finally. “What are you doing here?”
Zac’s chest immediately tightened. Why was Pari acting like this? It was literally last week
that she was hugging him and asking if he respected her. Where was this coming from? He
decided the best course of action was to cool his temper and act normal. After all, most
people did not know about his and Pari’s bet.
“Max is one of my best friends and a colleague of mine. I think I can ask the same of you,
Rahman.” Zac riposted, looking at her outfit and then at the bouquet she was holding. “Nice
flowers.”
“They are for Florence actually.” Pari said with a delicate huff. “I knew Florence from
secondary school.”
“Am I interrupting something?” Seda grinned from ear to ear.
“No!” Pari and Zac said at the same time.
“You guys seem like two peas in a pod.” Eric chuckled, turning to Seda. “How do you two
know each other?”
“We are working on a-” Pari rummaged through her mind to try and think of something
appropriate yet wistful to say.
“A project.” Zac said quickly. “Pari’s company is one of my clients.”
Pari shot him a guarded look. Eric took this as an opportunity to delve deeper.
“What’s the name of your company?” Eric asked mischievously.
“And you are?” Zac ignored Eric’s question, turning his attention to Seda.
“Seda Kaplan at your service.” Seda beamed. “I’m Pari’s best friend.”
“Pari’s best friend?” Zac said rather quickly.
“She never mentioned me?” Seda was aghast.

“Excuse me, I have to go and give these to Flo.” Pari excused herself and left the four of
them.
“She doesn’t tell me everything.” Zac rolled his eyes, shoving a hand in his trouser pocket.
“I’m not her-“
“Ah, so you are the infamous Zachariah Durrani?” Seda pursed her lips, narrowing her eyes.
“Pari described me as ‘infamous?’ Zac chuckled. “How fascinating.”
“Will you use that as fodder for your next rendezvous with her?” Seda raised a quizzical
eyebrow, moving her handbag from one elbow to the other.
“You know, don’t you?” Zac folded his arms. He dropped his gaze from a friendly, animated
one to a serious one.
“I figured it out before she told me and the girls.” Seda half-smiled, her gaze now serious.
“Erratic behaviour, scrolling through Instagram, googling random things. I can read her like a
book.”
“Googling random things?” Zac ran a hand through his hair, his lips almost going into a smug
smile. “How fascinating.”
“His close friends know about their meetings too.” Eric adjusted one of his cuffs with a lazy
hand, uncomfortable with this sudden showdown between the two.
“I only told Charles and Hugo.” Zac said sourly.
“Anyway, I hope you find her a husband soon.” Seda touched one of her earrings, pulling at
it. “Time is running out.”
“Zac never loses.” Eric thumped a fist on Zac’s back.
Zac remained unmoved and stared at Seda. “He’s right.”
“Let’s hope for your sake you will.” Seda stared back at him with the same amount of
defiance.
What the hell was that supposed to mean? For his sake?
If anything, it was Pari who had more to lose surely. Marrying a man, she didn’t love. Wait,
in that instance, he would be compromised too! He would marry someone he doesn’t
love…But the way his mind would be at peace and enjoy himself when he was around her
said something different. He was so sure before that he would be able to find her a
husband. Even if he did, would he want her to get married to someone else? Someone else
who would make Pari smile…Did he really want that?
“Let’s have a chat, Zac.” Pari’s voice snapped him out of his internal monologue. “Before the
ceremony begins.”
“Sure.” Zac felt his face heating up, as his eyes darted from Eric and then to Seda. He
mouthed ‘help me’ to a laughing Eric and a frowning Seda.
Zac followed her outside of the church to the garden.
“What’s this all about?” Zac said in a hushed tone.
“I just want to be clear about what happened the other day.” Pari’s voice was tinged with
regret, her face paling at the memory.
“What happened the other day?” Zac shoved both his hands into his pockets, his jacket
straining against his shoulders.
Flashes of Pari crying, her hugging him in the rain tightly, the way he could feel her
heartbeat racing against his…it all ran through his mind at once.
“I just want to apologize.” Pari managed to mutter.
“Apologize for what?” Zac’s response almost came out harsher than he expected as he
frowned.
“I shouldn’t have acted like that.” Pari sighed.
“Look, we are friends.” Zac raised a languorous hand. “It’s okay to be emotional."
“I know but I majorly overreacted.” Pari started to pace up and down the path huffing while
Zac watched her dutifully. “I don’t know what came over me.”
“It’s a good thing.” Zac replied in a measured tone, his lips now edging into a smile. “It
means you trust me.”
“I do trust you.” Pari stopped walking. She looked at him with a steely gaze.
“Well, I am glad we had this talk.” Zac stepped towards her, now properly smiling.
“Also, there was another thing.” Pari shifted from one foot to another. “Did Seda say
anything to you?”
“Not of any importance.” Zac’s eyes rested on her diamond necklace, admiring how the
stones glimmered and glittered under the sun.
“Oh, thank God.” Pari cried, shaking her head. “I thought she would embarrass me.”
“Even if she did, it wouldn’t matter. I have my own opinion of you.”
“And what is that?”
“You are exceptional.”
“Exceptional?”
“Do you want me to elaborate?”
“No, no.” Pari waved her hands around. “I erm, think that should suffice.”
What the hell was that? Exceptional? In what way? In what manner was he to say that to
her? Did he really consider her as an equal? Or not even an equal, did he really see her in a
194
different way than just friends who had a life compromising bet they were adhering to for
the time being.
Zac took a step closer to her, trying not to inhale her perfume. Today was a mixture of
vanilla, ambrette and musk.
“I think we should get back to the wedding, don’t you?” It didn’t sound like a question, it
sounded like a statement.
“Right.” Pari said quickly. “The wedding.”
“The wedding.” Zac repeated.
“The rest of them will be thinking where we have gone.” Pari gave a nervous laugh, her
fingers gripping the bouquet with more force than she intended.
“Soon enough, it will be you.” Zac said softly. Not even thinking twice, he took her arm in
his. Pari’s hand
Zac was right. The whole part of the bet was that he was to find her a husband. Soon,
enough it would be her. But why couldn’t she imagine saying her nikkah vows to anyone but
him? Why couldn’t she think of another man lifting her veil and smiling at her? What were
these thoughts anyway? Was it just her brain trying to comfort her because time was indeed
running out…4 months exactly. She could just say they had not got a written contract done
and so the bet didn’t count. If the bet didn’t count, then how would she and Zac explain all
the time they spent together? All the time he had tried to look for her, to comfort her and
to be nice to her. If the bet hadn’t existed, would any of this even happened? There was too
much to think about.
And another thing, why didn’t she yank her arm from his? Why on earth did it feel so natural
to her? Pari was surprised at the sudden gesture but did not protest. They walked in silence
until Zac paused before the hall door.
Pari looked up at him, gazing into his eyes. Did she see fear for a split second? No, not fear,
it looked like anguish. But why would he be feeling a sense of anguish of her getting
married? Didn’t he agree to the best with such confidence at the start?

How do you feel about the fact that some men only receive flowers on their graves and some never do.
