I’ve noticed that some foreigners like to say Indonesian women are “too eager” to marry foreign men. 👀🤏🏻

But I think that statement often comes from people who don’t fully understand the circumstances, family dynamics, and social reality in Indonesia.

Indonesian men are still very much respected and considered capable of being good qawwam. In fact, many Indonesian parents would actually prefer their daughters to marry Indonesian men because the cultural understanding is easier, the family dynamics are more familiar, and marriage does not automatically mean living far away from home.

Cross-cultural marriage is not some glamorous shortcut.

It comes with different mindsets, languages, family expectations, legal documents, relocation, distance from parents, raising children across cultures, and a level of compromise that people often underestimate.

So if many Indonesian Muslim women are genuinely open to marrying foreigners, I actually see another side of it too:

It means they are often willing to adapt, relocate, learn another culture, respect differences, build a life far from their own family, and accept the reality that marriage may require a lot of flexibility and sacrifice.

That is not necessarily desperation.

Sometimes it is simply openness, adaptability, courage, and willingness to build a life beyond what is familiar.

And perhaps that is also why mixed marriages are becoming more visible in Indonesia. Many Indonesian women grow up learning to be flexible, respectful, family-oriented, and willing to support a husband in his role as qawwam.

Of course, every woman is different, every marriage is different, and nationality alone never guarantees compatibility.

But reducing Indonesian women to “they just want foreigners” misses the much bigger picture.

Sometimes what looks like “eagerness” from the outside is actually readiness to take on a very complicated kind of marriage. 🤍

Update.: I shed some tears this morning, but excited for her new life. Older sisters are a blessing. Just thinking about all the times I told her no when she wanted to hang out. Just the annoying lil bro mentality …
