This glazed ceramic oil lamp is one of the remarkable examples of Iranian applied art in the post-Islamic conquest period, dating back more than a thousand years. It is currently housed in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
The body of the lamp is made of pottery and covered with a beautiful turquoise glaze. Over time, fine cracks have developed across its surface, giving it an aged, distinctive, and soulful appearance. This type of glaze, widely used in Iran during the medieval Islamic period, reflects the mastery of Iranian potters in both the chemical and artistic techniques involved in producing decorative and functional objects.
Lamps of this kind were commonly used in homes, religious buildings, and public spaces to provide light during the night. Beyond their everyday function, however, they also embodied the distinctive aesthetic sensibilities of their era. Their simple yet harmonious design, featuring an elongated spout and a designated wick opening, beautifully combines practicality with artistic elegance.
Similar examples of these lamps have been discovered at important cultural and archaeological sites such as Nishapur, Ray, Gorgan, and Kashan, all testifying to the richness and sophistication of Iranian civilization during the early centuries of the Islamic period.
The preservation of this lamp in a prestigious institution such as the Ashmolean Museum is a testament to the international significance of Iranian art and its enduring cultural legacy throughout the centuries.
