My first husband and father of my children passed away in 2016. I reverted 2 years later. In 2022 I married a born Muslim. He seemed perfect when we first met. Shortly after we married, he started fighting with my kids. Then he started taking small digs at me at first. He then started to constantly criticize me for everything. He isolated from friends first. Then he tried to isolate me from my family which never worked. He bulldozed every boundary I had. Eventually his behavior became erratic and he wasn’t coming home and taking a lot of business trips as a social worker and “boys trips” with the guys. I kept asking for a divorce and he promised to be better. This went on for a while , meanwhile his emotional abuse got worse. I eventually dug through phone records and Googled most called numbers and found him talking to a local woman 7 to 8 times a day. I asked him to leave and he moved in with her and we divorced in May. The whole experience has traumatized me. I spent the last 3 years being mistreated and unloved. I thought moving on and finding real love was my best way to heal outside of therapy. The problem I’m having is that I seem to self sabotage when I meet someone. I’m not sure if I’m seeing real red flags in the few people I met or if my anxiety is playing a role. I’m 47, and just really want to feel safe again with a partner. I’m really feeling lonely and keep hearing to let the past live in the past, but how can I do that when men always want to know why I’m divorced and they don’t take “It just didn’t work” as a good enough answer? When I tell the truth about the abuse and cheating, they will say I must have made him do it.
