I think we have almost completely lost the concept of marrying for the sake of Allah (SWT). Nowadays, when people look for a spouse, they ask: How tall is he? How much money does he make? How beautiful is she? And what kind of lifestyle can he or she provide for me? While attraction, compatibility, and all of these things are important, they have now become the main focus. We have started treating marriage as a way to gain a better lifestyle rather than a path to Jannah. The Sahaba (RA) did not marry someone because they met all the worldly standards. They married because they wanted a partner who would bring them closer to Allah, help them obey Allah, wake them up for Fajr, remind them of Allah when they forgot, help them raise righteous children, and assist them on the path to Jannah. The problem is not that we want a good spouse. The problem is that we have made this dunya our destination and the akhirah an afterthought. But if your spouse brings you closer to Allah, then you have found something far more valuable than beauty, wealth, or status. Because the best marriage is not the one that gives you the best lifestyle. The best marriage is the one that helps you get closer to Jannah.
