A colleague of mine saw a small bird on her way to class. It was cold and raining, and the bird looked weak it couldn’t fly or run. With gentle care, she picked it up and took it to her office, where it was warm and safe. One of her colleagues asked. "Aren't you scared of this bird"?

She kept the bird there for two days, giving it the warmth and rest it needed. By the third day, Alhamdulillah, the bird had recovered it could walk, and eventually flew away.

I learned two lessons from the incident:

In some cultures, especially among us Yoruba, people attach negative meanings to animals like birds or cats. But in reality, a bird is just a bird, and a cat is just a cat. As long as you say Bismillah before touching it, and you’ve done your morning Adhkar, there’s no need to fear. Our protection comes from Allah, not superstition.

Islam also encourages us to show compassion not only to humans but to animals too. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) emphasized kindness to all creatures. That bird could have died if left in the cold, but through one small act of mercy, it got a second chance at life.

This reminded me that animals also feel pain, get tired, and need warmth and care like we do. One small act of kindness can make a big difference not just to animals but also to humans

Remember that kindness matters. Whether it’s to humans or animals, you never know when your simple act of mercy and kindness might be exactly what that creature needs and a means of reward from Allah.

May Allah grant us mercy in this life and hereafter
