A Conversation I Will Never Forget 🤍

One day, I was traveling on a long journey when a woman I had never met before happened to sit next to me.

The road was long, and I was getting bored. So, like many of us would do, I took out my phone and started scrolling through Facebook, trying to pass the time.

After a while, the woman started talking to me. We exchanged a few words, and then she said something that stayed with me long after that journey ended.

She said:

“Let me give you a piece of advice. You can watch videos on your phone anytime you want, but this road… you might never travel along it again. So, instead of spending the entire journey scrolling through your phone, try to leave behind something that will testify in your favor on the Day of Judgment.”

Her words made me pause.

She then reminded me of the verse in the Qur’an:

“That Day, it will report its news.” (Surah Az-Zalzalah, 99:4)

She explained that the earth will bear witness to what happened upon it on the Day of Judgment. Every place we visit, every step we take, and every good deed we perform may become a witness for us before Allah.

She also reminded me of the teaching that even the places where a believer used to worship Allah will miss them after their death.

Then she said something I have never forgotten:

“Whenever you visit a new place, leave something good behind. Pray two rak‘ahs, remember Allah, seek His forgiveness, recite a few verses from the Qur’an, or simply say SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar. Let the places you pass through become witnesses for you, not against you.”

I remembered the words attributed to Abu Ad-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him):

“Remember Allah beside every stone and every tree, so that they may testify for you on the Day of Judgment.” 🤍

Since that day, I have looked at journeys differently.

Sometimes, we spend hours traveling with music in our ears or our eyes fixed on our screens, forgetting that even an ordinary journey can become an opportunity to earn rewards from Allah.

You may never pass through that road again, but imagine leaving it with a prayer, a remembrance of Allah, or a verse from His Book.

What if the place where you stopped, the ground beneath your feet, or the spot where you prayed became a witness to your good deeds on the Day of Judgment?

So, I wanted to share this story with you. Perhaps it will touch someone's heart, just as that woman's words touched mine.

The next time you travel, put your phone aside for a moment. Replace the music with the beautiful recitation of the Qur’an. Let your tongue remember Allah, and let every journey bring you closer to Him.

Because in the end, the goal is not simply to pass through this world, but to leave behind good deeds that will speak in our favor when we stand before Allah.

May Allah make us among the people of Jannah, fill our lives with remembrance of Him, and make every place we visit a witness to our good deeds.

Allahumma, make us among the people of Paradise. Ameen. 🤍

I’m a bit ashamed to admit it, but I have certain preconceptions about choosing a man who wasn’t born muslim.
That said, I’m open to the idea that some might even be more observant than I am. Well, I certainly hope so.
