One of the things I really admire about Miyazaki is that he actually lives by what he believes.
When ‘Spirited Away’ was nominated for an Oscar in 2003, he chose not to attend because of his opposition to the Iraq War. He didn’t want to visit a country that was bombing Iraq. It’s easy to talk about your beliefs, but it means something when you’re willing to stand by them, even when it could cost you something.
I love how he portrays women and men in his films. His girls aren’t there to be sexualised. They’re strong, curious, flawed and brave. And his male characters can be vulnerable, gentle and emotional while still being principled and courageous.
There’s just so much humanity in his work, and I think that’s what makes it so special. May Allah guide him to the truth. Ameen.
