This article addresses the question:
“Whom Muslim men and women are permitted to marry
in accordance with Allah’s Family Law in the Quran?”
This question is frequently raised by Muslims living in the United
Kingdom, for understandable reasons.
My experience, when I lived in Egypt during the first 24 years of my life,
and before moving to the UK, we never had to deal with this question.
Egypt has Muslims, who are all Sunni, and a Christian minority, who are
Orthodox, living together in peace and harmony.
The Muslim population were all aware that a chaste Muslim man can
marry a chaste Muslim woman or a chaste Christian woman in
accordance with Verse 5:5 and a chaste Muslim woman can only marry
a chaste Muslim man as stated in Verse 60:10.
Not withstanding the above, no Christian family would accept a Muslim
son in law and no Muslim woman would dare to marry a Christian man,
against the wishes of her guardian. This could easily lead to honour
killings. So these social limits were fully observed by both, Muslims and
Christians living in Egypt. But there is a very small minority of Muslim men
who married Christian women. Unfortunately, it appears most of these
marriages have not been happy marriages.

A) The first group includes the following blood relatives or relatives by
marriage:
4:23. “Prohibited to you [for marriage] are your mothers,
your daughters, your sisters, your father's sisters, your
mother's sisters, your brother's daughters, your sister's
daughters, your [milk] mothers who nursed you, your
sisters through nursing, your wives' mothers, and your
step- daughters under your guardianship [born] of your
wives unto whom you have gone in. But if you have not
gone in unto them, there is no sin upon you. And [also
prohibited are] the wives of your sons who are from your
[own] loins, and that you take [in marriage] two sisters
simultaneously, except for what has already occurred.
Indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
4:24. “And [also prohibited to you are all] married women
except those your right hands possess. [This is] the
decree of Allah upon you. And lawful to you are [all
others] beyond these, [provided] that you seek them [in
marriage] with [gifts from] your property, desiring
chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse. So for whatever
you enjoy [of marriage] from them, give them their due
compensation as an obligation. And there is no blame
upon you for what you mutually agree to beyond the
obligation. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.”
The reverse of the above would apply to Muslim women. So a Muslim
woman can’t marry her father or her son or her brother, etc …

B) The second group includes those who committed adultery/
fornication and didn’t repent:
24:3. “The fornicator does not marry except a [female] fornicator or
polytheist, and none marries her except a fornicator or a polytheist, and
that has been made unlawful to the believers.”
C) The third group includes idol worshippers/ Polytheists:
2:221. “And do not marry women who are polytheists until
they believe, and a believing slave- girl is better than a
polytheistic woman, even though she may please you, and
do not give your women in marriage to men who are
polytheists until they believe, and a believing slave is
better than a polytheist, even though they may please you.
These invite you to the Fire and Allah invites you to the
Garden and forgiveness by His leave, and He makes clear
His revelations to mankind, that they may be mindful.”
D) It is Important to state that a chaste Muslim man is permitted to
marry a chaste Christian or Jewish woman, in accordance with Verse
5:5 below, although she is regarded by Allah as Kaferah کافرۃ , unbeliever,
as stated in Verses 5:17, 5:72 and 5:73, given below.
Allah doesn’t regard her as an idol worshipper, Mushrekah مشرکۃ . She is
from the People of the Book. That is the People who have been given the
Scripture before us.
There is a big difference between a (Mushrek مشرک), an idol
worshipper/polytheist and a (Kafer کافر), an unbeliever. Every idol
worshipper (Mushrek مشرک) is (Kafer کافر), unbeliever, but not every
unbeliever (Kafer کافر) is (Mushrek مشرک), idol worshipper. Allah has
clearly distinguished between both of them in many verses in the Quran.

Let me explain this further. If, a Muslim man, denies the five daily prayers
,مشرک unbeliever, but not a Mushrek ,کافر or the Zakat, he becomes a Kafer
idol worshipper. Similarly if he denies any of the Prophets of Allah, or
any of His Divine Revelations, or the Journey by Night by the Prophet
Mohammed ﷺ, or any of the Miracles of the Prophets of Allah, he
becomes a Kafer کافر, a disbeliever but not a Mushrek مشرک, an idol
worshipper.
I set out below the Verses which confirm that those who claim that
کافر Jesus is God or Son of God or God is Oneof
Three, are Kafer
unbelievers, but not Mushrekeen مشرکین, not idol worshippers. If they were
Mushrekeen مشرکین, idol worshippers, Muslim men would have been
prohibited to marry their women, as stated in Verse 2:221, given above.
5:17. “They have certainly disbelieved who say that Allah is
Christ, the son of Mary. Say, "Then who could prevent Allah
at all if He had intended to destroy Christ, the son of Mary, or
his mother or everyone on the earth?" And to Allah belongs
the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is
between them. He creates what He wills, and Allah is over all
things competent.”
5:72. “They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the
Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O
Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord."
Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has
forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there
are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.”
5:73. “They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the
third of three." And there is no god except one God. And if
they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely
afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.”

As I mentioned earlier, I will share with you my experiences and the situations I encountered on dating sites.

*Experience #2

A year ago, I met a Muslim man with the intention of marriage. We used to discuss the situation in our respective countries, as he was living in the United States while I was living in Kuwait.

During our conversations, I asked him if he suffered from any specific health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease and he replied that he had no health issues.

He then asked me if I had any health problems, I told him I didn't, but I did mention that I have had a stutter since birth (a condition that is not an issue for me)

However, his response was shocking, he said, "I noticed that, and I don't wish to marry a woman who stutters, so that the genes are not passed on to my children."

I wanna feel the heart of her tired soles against my chest, to acknowledge the laden steps she’s taken just to prove her worth, and the times she had to run in seclusion for a minute’s rest.

I cannot tell such an ambitious spirit to stop because I’m here. She’s not from a place who watch their men toil alone.

The kind of man to bring her tea right after Fajr, and the kind of woman who’ll fold his prayer mat.

There’s no language barrier here.
