Straightforward Communication

One thing I genuinely struggle with in British dating culture is the amount of ghosting and indirect communication.

I’m American, and maybe that’s where the difference comes from, but I’d rather someone be completely straightforward with me. If we’ve been talking for weeks or months, spent time together, even had dinner, and then suddenly you disappear, unmatch me and block me on WhatsApp… what exactly happened?

If you don’t like me, just tell me. If something I said or did put you off, tell me. If you’ve met someone else, tell me. You don’t have to be rude or disrespectful — just be honest.

I actually believe clear communication is a form of respect. If you tell someone what didn’t work for you, they can understand it, learn from it and perhaps improve themselves. But disappearing without a word leaves the other person wondering what the hell happened.

And honestly, if you were never interested, why spend weeks or months talking to someone and giving them your time in the first place?

Finding someone else attractive is normal. Losing interest is normal. Realising someone isn't compatible with you is normal.

Ghosting someone after building a connection isn't.

Just have the courage to say, “I don't think this is going to work.” It takes 30 seconds, and at least you leave the other person with clarity rather than confusion.

Being straightforward doesn't mean being cruel. Sometimes honesty is actually the kinder option.
