Greatest screw ups in Muslim history:
1 - Battle of Tours.
The Umayyad invasion of Gaul (Now France) back in 732. After conquering Al Andalus, they turned their sights to capture the rich lands of the Franks. Did the Umayyads get too greedy? Was the Empire overstretched? they expanded rapidly from 632 to 732. Toppling Persia, weakening Byzantines. Amazing achievements.
2- The Great Turkish War 1683-1699
The Ottomans aimed to expand their influence and imperial might to the rich lands of Austria and Germany, after they already merged most of the Balkans. They captured many areas of Hungary before trying to take Vienna. It was them solo versus the Holy Roman Empire, Habsburg dynasty, Venetian republic, Poland-Lithuania, and the Russian Tsardom. Did they fight too many enemies at once marking the beginning of their decline? Did they ignore the Safavid enemy to the east who is basically flanking them? They were in a bad position of being surrounded by enemies every side.
3- Failure to colonize the Americas (1500s to 1900s)
Britain, France, Spain, and Portugal had the advantage to colonize Americas. How would an Ottoman expansion look like? Is ethical colonization possible to spread the word of Islam? Is participating in the trans Atlantic slave trade necessary to build imperial wealth?
