The concept of "posh" does not survive the Channel crossing intact.
In fact, it drowns somewhere off the coast of Calais, and what washes ashore in Hamburg, Zurich, or Stockholm is an entirely different creature.
To the British, "posh" is about birth and performance—an aristocratic accent, a crumbling estate, a studied eccentricity.
To the Germanic and Nordic world, that brand of flamboyant eccentricity is viewed with profound suspicion.

The Germanic elite operates on a triad:

  1. Bildung – Deep, classical cultivation (education, philosophy, music, literature).
You are not born into status; you earn it through the mind.
  2. Sachlichkeit – Objectivity, practicality, and competence.
    Flamboyance is for the untrustworthy.
  3. Zurückhaltung – Restraint, reserve, and a pathological aversion to public display.
If British posh is a peacock, Germanic Vornehmheit is a grey heron—standing perfectly still in a marsh, barely visible, but utterly commanding.

The Germanic Anti-Posh: What is Verboten
· Accents: Unlike Britain, where a particular accent signals class, a strong regional dialect in Germany is considered rustic—but speaking too cleanly is also suspicious. The elite speak with perfect clarity but no discernible local colour.
· Flashy Cars: A convertible in Zurich or Munich signals arriviste. The old guard drives a Volvo Estate or a dull-coloured Mercedes E-Class.
· Celebrity: They despise fame. The truly Vornehm avoid newspapers. Their names appear only in the society pages of the FAZ (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) when they die—and even then, only in a three-line obituary.

In the Germanic world, you cannot buy your way into Vornehmheit—and you certainly cannot inherit it without proving yourself intellectually. You earn your seat at the table through a doctorate, a decade of board service, and a complete, lifelong commitment to invisibility.
To be "posh" in Germany is to be the person in the room that no one notices—until they speak, and the room falls silent, because they have just quoted Kant, corrected the host's grammar, and suggested a better wine, all in a voice so quiet that everyone leaned in to hear it.

"Man zeigt nicht was man hat",
Flexing/flamboyance (blöffe or bløffe) is performative and rooted in insecurity or deceitfulness. It is the antithesis of Vornehmheit and a betrayal of the social contract. Displaying wealth suggests that one is not focused on one's work and civic duties, but on personal vanity. Someone who flexes is someone who has forgotten where they come from, they have become rootless.

Ngl contemplating "poshness" is now one of my fixations lol. 🤭
