Priorities Character or Attraction

Character is the foundation, but attraction is the door. Both matter, just in different ways.
Character sustains a marriage long term. Deen, values, kindness, and emotional maturity are what you live with every day. Attraction also has a place in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ even encouraged looking at the person before marriage so affection can grow.
The real issue isn’t attraction, but confusing it with unrealistic beauty standards. Attraction can grow from comfort and connection. But if there’s no spark at all, it’s hard for a marriage to thrive. So the real balance is to choose someone whose character you admire, and whose presence your heart naturally feels at ease with.

Being open to marrying someone from a different background or culture can be a beautiful thing. However, actively filtering out people from your own ethnicity because you place others on a pedestal is something else. Some people here need to confront their internalised racism, especially before bringing children into the world. Black Skin, White Masks by Frantz Fanon would be a good place to start.
