I wrote this on the way back to Khartoum after 5 years of being away due to my studies at first and then war. The feelings were strong and I was really anticipating going back. However, seeing a once lively city in such shape and form broke me into pieces…

It goes like this:

While the car pressed forward toward a destination that felt endlessly out of reach,
Every mile forward
pressed harder against my chest,

Something inside me unraveled—
longing loosening its grip just enough
to flood into tears I could not hold,
could not name,
could not stop.

Excitement swelled too quickly, too loudly,
tangled with memory until it ached.
I found myself reaching for images—
what will it be like now?
How damaged are you?
our home,
my school,
my university,
streets and places I once walked so easily, so carelessly—
now flickering, distant,
softened into something fragile and almost unreal.

My sweet sweet home,
my beloved city—

how deeply I yearn for you.
To arrive at your edges.
To feel your warmth wrap around me again.
To stand within all that remains—
and to weep,
for what was,
for what still is,
for what you have endured
and for the version of you I carry—
no longer untouched,
yet still and forever home.
