Here’s a touchy topic for a lot of single mothers sisters which merits a serious discussion. Step-parenting and wider child discipline. Potential Trigger warning ⚠️
So whoever has been around step-children or has children, what is your experience of adult framework and child discipline? Children need a robust framework of expected behavioural conduct as it sets the standard on what is acceptable and what is not. It reminds me of an article I read once on a concept called family governance.
I have observed and interacted directly with many Muslim parents and I’m aghast at the lack of oversight I see in m y households via over-compensation, tokenised comfort, anti-reflective coating on their parental tongues and a hostile attitude to any genuine sit down or criticism.
I remember speaking with my potential wife back then a good few years ago and I engaged with her, highlighted politely my views on adult interventions which provide a bedrock of stability that almost always results in a child with the correct attitude and healthier relationships as a result. Children can take time to embrace you into their circle of trust and it very much is an exercise of patience. There were moments of success where I received a call from an ex husband asking my help to understand tween choices and there were moments of failure and breakdown of comms.
I’ve also come across many sisters via family friends and through social interactions who are very defensive and abrupt and almost always set out counter-intuitive boundaries for their new spouses and cite the biological father for behaviour management even though the child’s behaviour is the resultant of a lack of paternal intervention from him in the first place.
Sisters what are your thoughts? Who would you entrust to discipline and guide your children emotionally through challenging behaviour as they tiptoe and meander around new relationships?
