I always had some very basic principles I taught my son while he was young and growing up.

One was: “Respect the word no.”

Another was: “Go after what you want, but get it the good way” with good manners etc. And if you can’t get it the good way, it’s not worth having.

At 18, it’s great to be able to remind him in a more age appropriate way:

“You know what I’ve always said to you: go after what you want, but go after it the good way. I don’t want you to give up on things that matter to you. I’m actually encouraging you to pursue them. But I want you to be able to look back and know you pursued them in a way you can respect.

And also, respecting someone’s ‘no’ doesn’t mean you’ll always agree with their no. It means recognising that they’ve said no, and having enough dignity to respect their boundaries, whilst deciding what’s appropriate for you to do next, without becoming in opposition with someone.”

Do you have some basic principles you drum into your kids?

Even though I’m now divorced, I made it a core principle in my life to still keep in touch with my step children should anything happen. I feel very blessed they have an active, independent relationship with me and it’s so lovely to see that we can all still behave amicably. I always try to be there for them and I say alhumdulillah to have them as part of my life.

So I was having a morning chat with my teen step daughter this morning who was dad shaming me for my millennial “shoe game” lol 🤣 also we were arguing over which sushi style is better, traditional or cali crunch. Dark or light soy. After we got off the phone, I became a little emotional because I was thinking Subhanallah, I don’t get to see my actual bio daughter but Allah blessed me with another daughter I never thought I’d have.

To the many brothers on here who ever see potential step-children as a burden, I have some serious lived advice for you: if you sincerely make an effort to make them feel safe and as part of your life, no matter what happens they will still maintain their friendship with you. Always be grateful to have them as some people don’t even have children.
