Just wanted to have a little rant because some of my recent experiences with Muslim matchmaking have genuinely left me scratching my head. 🤦♂️
I recently had a phone call with someone who presented herself as quite religious. She wasn’t comfortable sharing her pictures, which I respected. But during the call, she repeatedly brought up horoscopes and astrology!
I explained several times that I don’t believe in any of it. As Muslims, shouldn’t we understand how seriously Islam treats claims about predicting the unseen? Believing that stars and zodiac signs determine our destiny can even cross into shirk.
Despite making my position clear, she kept insisting on discussing it. When I finally said I thought horoscopes were nonsense 💩, she abruptly ended the call and unmatched me!
This isn’t even my first experience of religious incompatibility. I previously spoke with a revert who kept dismissing Sunnah while insisting I accept certain Sufi interpretations associated with Ibn Arabi, ignoring early exegetes of Quran and forcing me to accept Sufi translations! I pointed out my issues , but I got rudely ignored
What genuinely puzzles me is how much emphasis some people place on outward religiosity while seemingly overlooking the very foundation of Islam Tawhid and sound aqeedah.
I sometimes wonder whether we’ve become so focused on appearing religious that we’ve neglected understanding what we actually believe.
Surely what we actually believe about Allah, His attributes and the unseen is at least as important as how religious we appear outwardly?
Does anyone else find it increasingly difficult to meet someone with compatible Islamic beliefs and values?
