That thought is genuinely frightening.

It makes you realize that marriage is not just about finding someone you love. It is about becoming someone whose absence would leave an enormous emptiness in another person’s life.

So while we are here, while we still have each other, perhaps we should be a little more patient, a little more affectionate, and a lot less careless with the people we say we want to spend our lives with.

Because the hardest part of growing old together may not be growing old.

It may be having to grow old without each other.
