An uncomfortable question about modern Muslim matchmaking: Are we choosing a life partner, or conducting a financial interview?

Somewhere along the way, a man’s potential has become less impressive than his possessions. His bank balance can open doors that his character might never get the chance to knock on.

Of course, financial responsibility matters. Women have every right to seek stability, just as men deserve a partner who understands that life isn’t always a finished success story. But a man’s current circumstances don’t necessarily define the husband, provider, or companion he can become.

Faith should mean more than a few attractive words on a profile. It should reflect in our expectations, our honesty, and the way we treat people who have something meaningful to offer beyond money.

If we claim to value Deen, loyalty, and sincerity, do we actually practise those values when choosing a spouse—or do we abandon them the moment wealth enters the conversation?

In Pakistan, men are often expected to be financially settled before they’re considered worthy of marriage, while women are judged for their own expectations and choices. Both carry pressures that deserve empathy. Wanting financial stability isn’t wrong, and wanting someone who believes in your potential isn’t unrealistic. But somewhere between financial security and emotional connection, we risk forgetting what marriage is supposed to be about.

Are we looking for someone to build a life with, or someone who has already built one for us?

Funny how everyone on Muz claims to want a genuine Muslim partner, but money seems to be the real compatibility test. 🤷‍♂️ Where are the women who value loyalty, honesty, and a peaceful life over a man’s wallet? Or is sincerity just a nice word for a profile bio these days?
