In the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, marriage is described as a natural, moral, and protective institution with spiritual and social benefits. These teachings are found mainly in hadith collections such as Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

  1. Marriage as a protection of chastity
“O young people! Whoever among you is able to marry should marry, for it helps lower the gaze and guard chastity. And whoever cannot, should fast, for it is a shield for him.”

  2. Marriage as part of the Prophet’s way

“Marriage is part of my Sunnah, and whoever does not follow my Sunnah has nothing to do with me.”

  1. The best character in marriage

“The best of you are those who are best to their wives.”

  1. Marriage as half of faith (commonly reported meaning)

The Prophet emphasized that marriage helps complete a person’s moral and social responsibility, encouraging lawful companionship and family structure.

Across authentic narrations, marriage is presented as:

A protection of moral behavior
A source of companionship and stability
A strongly recommended Sunnah
A measure of good character through treatment of one’s spouse

Quran 2:187:
“They are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them.”
