Alhamdulillah for new beginnings 🕋🤝 Whether you're new to Islam or seeking guidance, here we share experiences, offer resources, and foster a sense of belonging on your unique journey as a convert.
The Qur’an says:
“Marry off those among you who are single…”
— Surah An-Nur 24:32
And Prophet Muhammad said:
“When someone whose religion and character you are pleased with comes to you (seeking marriage), then marry him/her. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation and widespread corruption on earth.”
Classical Islamic scholars understood from this that parents or guardians should not obstruct marriage without a valid Islamic reason.
Valid concerns can include:
Serious problems with religion or character
Abuse, dishonesty, addiction, irresponsibility
Clear incompatibility that would harm the marriage
But delaying or refusing marriage purely because of ethnicity or caste
social status
wealth expectations
cultural pride
excessive control
unrealistic standards
wanting the child to remain dependent
is generally criticized in Islamic teachings.
For daughters specifically, unjustly preventing marriage is known in Islamic law as “ʿaḍl” (wrongful obstruction by a guardian), which is condemned in the Qur’an:
“Do not prevent them from marrying their husbands when they mutually agree in a lawful manner.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:232
At the same time, Islam still emphasizes respect and kindness toward parents, even during disagreement. The ideal approach is:
•calm discussion
•involving trusted family elders
•calm discussion
•involving trusted family elders
•seeking help from knowledgeable scholars/imams
•making istikhārah and du‘ā’ seeking help from knowledgeable scholars/imams
making istikhārah and du‘ā’
Parents usually act from fear, protectiveness, culture, or concern, even when they are mistaken. Islam encourages balance: children should honor parents, and parents should not abuse their authority.
And finally I realize, the answer to all the great questions echoing in my heart comes down to just one truth. I simply lost sight of the fact that this world is merely a test, a fleeting journey meant to guide me toward my ultimate purpose, long after my time on this earth has come to an end♥️
I realize where I made my mistake, I forgot what my Pops told me a long time ago. He said :
“Son if you want to have eternal PEACE in your life you have to lower your expectations, and increase your acceptance.”
•
I never quite understood where to apply that really until now.
You see I had high expectations from this Ummah only to learn that the Deen is perfect, but the people are far from that. That’s where the acceptance comes in. I’m still learning how to accept the shortcomings of the racism, division, prejudice, and overall hypocrisy of some of the community that are in charge of wider communities.
•
I now understand it’s ok to speak up against this because some voices cannot be heard. I was once told that the most difficult Jihad was the one with yourself. The Nafs ( Self ) are constantly in battle and that’s where the practice of our faith comes in.
•
It gives us hope, and strength to continue our fight, and increases our tolerance. I guess with all that has happened over the last few years my tolerance has decreased significantly. But now that I’m aware I know now I have to go harder in practice, increase my acceptance and continue to advocate against the things I don’t agree with. Someone said BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD 🌎
