Part 8 – Jesus (PBUH) in Islamic Tradition: The Missing Years and the Lessons We Lost
One of the great mysteries surrounding the life of Jesus (PBUH) is the “missing years” between his childhood and the beginning of his public mission around the age of 30. While the Bible remains largely silent about this period, Islamic tradition preserved glimpses of his wisdom, character, and teachings through the Sirah and Athar traditions - reports, narrations, reflections, and wisdom transmitted by early Muslim scholars regarding prophets and righteous people.
One famous narration tells of Jesus (PBUH) traveling with a companion through a barren land carrying a few loaves of bread. When they stopped to rest, Jesus placed the bread down. Later, one loaf had disappeared.
Jesus (PBUH) calmly asked:
“Who took the bread?”
The companion denied it.
They continued their journey. Along the way, Allah showed extraordinary miracles through Jesus (PBUH). In the narrations, Jesus revived the dead by Allah’s permission, healed the sick, and even walked upon water. After each miracle, Jesus (PBUH) would gently ask again:
“Who took the bread?”
And every single time, the man denied it. SubhanAllah.
A man was witnessing miracles with his own eyes - the dead returning to life and water being walked upon - yet his heart remained attached to one stolen loaf of bread and the lie surrounding it.
Then came the moment that exposed the true disease inside him.
Jesus (PBUH), by Allah’s permission, transformed sand or dust into gold. Suddenly, the companion’s heart changed completely. Not when the dead were raised. Not when the laws of nature were shattered before him. But when he saw gold. As Jesus (PBUH) prepared to leave, he once again asked: “Who took the bread?”
This time the man confessed: “I did.”
Not because truth had purified his heart, but because greed had already consumed him.
He stayed behind with the gold.
Soon, other travelers passed by and saw the treasure. Greed spread among them instantly. They killed the original companion to seize the gold, then betrayed and murdered one another over it until eventually all of them died. And in the end, the gold remained in the desert untouched and ownerless.
The story is not really about bread or gold. It is about the human soul. A person can stand beside a prophet, witness miracles with his own eyes, and still be destroyed by greed.
This connects beautifully to the reflection of Alija Izetbegović in his book “Islam Between East and West” when discussing Jesus (PBUH) and the nature of humanity. Alija explains that man exists between two possibilities: he can descend lower than the animal through greed, ego, and material obsession, or rise higher than the angels through morality, sacrifice, and conscious submission to Allah.
In many ways, Jesus (PBUH) in Islamic tradition represents that higher calling - simplicity over greed and spirituality over materialism.
Another beautiful narration describes Jesus (PBUH) walking with people when they came across the rotting corpse of a dead dog lying by the roadside. The smell was terrible, and the people around him immediately reacted with disgust:
“How horrible its smell is.”
“How ugly this dog is.”
Everyone focused on decay and ugliness.
But Jesus (PBUH) quietly looked at the same animal and simply said:
“How white its teeth are. SubhanAllah.
The dog was still dead. The smell still existed. But Jesus (PBUH) was teaching people how to see through the heart. Where others saw only ugliness, he still searched for beauty. It was not denial of reality, but refinement of the soul.
One of the most remarkable things about Islam is how it honors Jesus (PBUH). Muslims believe he was born miraculously, spoke while still in the cradle, healed the sick and revived the dead by Allah’s permission, and was among the greatest prophets sent to humanity. Yet Islam preserves both his greatness and his humanity. He is loved without being worshipped, honored without being turned into God, and respected without mythologizing him beyond humanity.
So while history leaves silence around many of Jesus’s “missing years,” Islamic tradition preserved something perhaps even greater than historical detail: his wisdom, his spirituality, his understanding of the human soul, and his call for humanity to rise above greed, ego, and material obsession.
May Allah make us among those who see beauty where others only see faults, and among those who choose the path of the soul over the temptations of the dunya. Ameen🙏
Juma Mubarak❤️
🌸 Assalaamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh Dear Muslim Family 🌸
The greatest blessing in this dunya is to love ALLAH sincerely. When you truly love ALLAH, your heart finds peace even during hardship. You cry to Him, trust Him, remember Him, and return to Him no matter how broken you feel.
People may leave, dunya may disappoint us, and plans may fail, but ALLAH remains near to His servants. His mercy never ends, His love never fades, and His door is never closed.
A believer who loves ALLAH is never truly lost, because their heart is attached to the One who controls everything.
May ALLAH fill our hearts with His love, keep us firm upon His deen, forgive our sins, and make us among those who remember Him often. Ameen Ya Rabb 🤍
📖 Quran Reminder:
“But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.”
— Quran Surah Al-Baqarah 2:165
Don't forget your brothers and sisters in your prayers during these blessed days.🙏🙏🙏
🌙 THE IMPORTANCE OF SEEKING KNOWLEDGE IN ISLAM 🌙
Islam highly encourages every Muslim to seek beneficial knowledge ("Ilm"). Knowledge is a light that guides a believer toward the right path and strengthens one’s relationship with ALLAH سبحانه وتعالى.
ALLAH says in the Qur’an:
«“Are those who know equal to those who do not know?”
— Surah Az-Zumar 39:9»
The first revelation sent to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was:
«“Read in the name of your Lord who created.”
— Surah Al-‘Alaq 96:1»
This shows how important education and learning are in Islam. Through knowledge, we learn:
✨ How to worship ALLAH correctly
✨ The difference between halal and haram
✨ Good manners and patience
✨ How to strengthen our iman
✨ How to help and guide others
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
«“Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.”
— Ibn Majah»
A Muslim should always strive to learn beneficial knowledge and act upon it sincerely for the sake of ALLAH.
🤲 May ALLAH increase us in beneficial knowledge, wisdom, understanding, and make us among those who practice what they learn. Ameen Ya Rabb.
